that's just wild, social media brings out the worst of humans on display. shamefur dispray edit: I'm talking about the twitter fight that ensued from this not Dekker
It was kind of taken out of context. That being said, I do agree with many points of the original article. Hard to be a student of history and ignore the violence that has led us to this point. I think where the article becomes over-simplistic is to ignore that violence isn't exclusive to Western civilization. It's just that no one else has been as efficient at scaling it.
There is nothing wrong with what he said because of who he is really, because he doesn't have a history of being racist... But...the context does matter, if he had been a noted racist or had done other questionable racist thing then there is a double meaning for that phrase. The whole "It's OKAY To Be White" meme was literally started by white nationalists. The whole idea was to get liberals to attack it as racist and then appeal to other white people that the libs hate white people. Unfortunately the KKK and modern day White Nationalists ruin simple and innocent statements like "White Pride" and "It's okay to be white."
He reserved a flight. Why do ppl do that, then think taking a photo of a reservation with no commitment to buy is some challenge. Then the gawkers say, "woo, he bought a ticket. Watcha gonna do bro." I wonder if that works with online flirting. Can I take a photo of a reservation and impress a girl into believing I bought her a ticket to Paris?
I feel like his intentions are in the right place but taking pride in race makes no sense. No one chooses their race, gender, family, etc... Pride should only be exercised over something one has chose and worked hard at. These so called concepts of race and racism are nonsense. We are all mixed, there is really no reason to even acknowledge let alone take pride or hate somone for it. Just my two cents.
I don't think Dekker is a racist, but how can he not see those string of words being problematic in the current culture space he plays in? Dekker's haircut doesn't help matters either.
That's not really true, it was started by online trolls who were looking to make really stupid people overreact and make asses of themselves over an innocuous statement, it worked. Your confusion on this topic is due to the fact that when just about everyone was laughing at those people for being stupid, some of the people laughing at them were your white nationalist groups. They also used the incident to bash their identitarian counterparts...but they had nothing to do with it initially. Those same online trolls have been baiting gullible morons for a long time.....remember when they had them convinced that the "OK" hand gesture meant "white power"? There's not many people less intelligent and more gullible than identitarians (no matter what type) so they are really easy and fun to troll. Unfortunately as a result of the trolling, you see people these days commonly overreacting to innocuous statements as the OP did here. It still makes them look every bit as stupid as it ever did, it's just more common.
Much ado about nothing. Why is this even news? It should be news if Dekker says I'm proud to be a Nazi playing basketball.
What exactly is "Pride" though? Can't it be totally benign with no bite, like Proud Parent of Honor Roll Student? Or like "Run As One" team motto? or Houston Proud? Is that too arrogant and nationalist? Also, what is "Humility" anymore? It seems society wont even let anyone chose a middle ground. People will "identify" as something, then identify YOU too, in contrast to what they themselves are. ("I Support ____ - What do you ____ people gotta say now?"). If you're too uninvolved & basic, then you're complicit in the bad. Dekker is presumed aligned up with the all bad aspects of his position.
I am speechless at this thread. A outright racistic thread and the most blunt response so far is "there's nothing wrong" like it needs explanation? WTF is wrong with you all?
