I don't know why you need to throw out all of your editorial adjectives to describe the N. Koreans and S. Koreans? The N. Koreans have pride, are sheltered beyond belief from any news other than propaganda. Most folks will stay in the N. Korean army because they get fed more than the starving populace.

Nobody really knows what the result would be if they invaded. But we know that Kim isn't stable, is brutal, and with nothing left to lose added to the pride issue, then it isn't safe to assume that they wouldn't invade.

I'm not saying S. Korea wouldn't win. But a victory would come at a huge cost. Why pay that cost when it's safer to keep our troops there? I would hope that progress will come and our troops would be able to leave, but right now isn't that time.

Can we all agree that Trump sucks at negotiation? The next successful negotiation will be his first. The guy is absolutely horrible.

I agree that it's worth a shot. If one assumes Kim will build more nukes regardless, then the details better have provisions to turn back that clock. Objections from negotiators about "giving Kim prestige with a Head of State visit" is one of the lower chips and talking points when you consider how much backbending we do with other "rogue states" when they get nukes.

Anyways, what you wrote sounds a lot like how the other side approached the Iran deal (albeit there was a lot more transparency with the Iran deal to the point where the Israelis tried to scuttle it before the ink dried). Looks like both sides will get to trade their "I told you so's" down the line, whatever that's worth. N. Koreans have shown to be less trustworthy imo, but who really knows how much either will honor deals, should this one turn out to be legit?

I find it interesting how divided between political lines foreign policy has become.

Probably what happens when we're still fighting in an unpopular war 15+ years later.

Trump-Kim Summit Ends with Promise to Suspend Military Exercises in the Korean Penninsula, https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/12/world/asia/trump-kim-summit.html

Mr. Trump’s pronouncement raised fears that Washington was making concessions before North Korea had actually dismantled its nuclear weapons. Both the Pentagon and South Korea were blindsided by this concession.

besides, NK who benefits from this concession? China.

    thinking aloud.

could this be one of conditions for China committing $450M to fund a Trump Co project in indonesia,
the other being being the lifting of sanctions against ZTE (a Chinese state-owned co caught violating the sanctions against NK)

What’s wrong with making a concession? Isn’t that how negotiation works?

Engaging in military exercises with South Korea serves no purpose; it’s just pointless antagonism.

Exactly why people yesterday said it was insane that Trump would meet with Kim one on one without an aide. NK was inevitably going to use that against him to claim he promised the moon.

I’m sure Trump is lying too or will lie about what Kim told him though because that’s just what happens when two maniac liars are left alone together in a room.

trump trying to spin his concessions (and sure... NK always deals in good faith!)... btw, troops stationed in South Korea are actually less costly since SK pays for part of them...
