Agree with your assessment. I think DJ is similar or better as a rim protector, but vastly worse as a perimeter defender. He's also a bad free throw shooter (Capela isn't great, but his % makes the defense think twice about fouling at least), and far less creative as a roll man, on the break, or even in ISO.

Maybe it’s me, but I didn’t read the thread. This is to drive down the price for Capela?

I don't know man. I don't really think he fits. Setting picks and catching oops in half court? Sure. But, he doesn't run the floor nearly as well as Clint and doesn't have the nimbleness and lateral quickness to switch out and defend smaller perimeter players like Clint.

Being Clints backup on a cheap contract? Hell yeah.

Yeah my thoughts as well. I actually should have included the previous reports that Clutch provided in the thread.

I know it’s not new, just felt like it was interesting. I’m betting DJ wants it more than ever right now.

Cool. If he wants to play for the Rockets so badly, all he has to do it is turn down his player option and take a massive pay cut :)

My eye test might deceive me, but I find Capela a much more capable pick and roll defender than DJ, basically since he stepped foot on the court. Against the Warriors, I don't feel his issues are so much defensively, as they are on the offensive end, and are centered around the Draymond/Harden matchup. Basically, Green is one of the few players that has the physical tools and outsmarts/outreflexes the Harden and Capela connection, and Harden has always had troubles making the right pinpoint decision of whether to go for the layup or floater, or pass it to Capela. Even in the WCF, Harden started out well, but eventually, Draymond adjusted, and by the time Harden could counter, CP3 was hobbled sitting on the sidelines and Harden could not breathe.

Back on point, Capela is just a lot more versatile offensively and defensively than DJ, and has shown flashes that his repertoire could expand even further. He also has all the traits of a guy who wants to be the best he can be, and will not be content to settle with just getting paid. I might be wrong, but with the facts at hand, that is my assumption.

All things being equal, you take Capela every time, so really, the only incentive for the Rockets going with DJ is to save money, if that is even in the equation. In the end, I suspect that if the Rockets do sign Lebron, the center position will be a secondary goal anyway, where it will be plugged with cheap contracts, given that the Rockets will be playing the majority of games with a Lebron/PJ front line, and if Ariza stays, our death lineup will be at least as lethal as the Warriors' and should be called the Compton 5, just to troll them.

The reason Capela didn't do as well offensively against the Warriors is because the Warriors switch on the pick and roll and it virtually eliminates Capela's ability to roll effectively. The Rockets had a little more success in getting Capela involved when they decided to start screening with a guard or wing instead of Capela to try to get dribble penetration and force the bigs to make a decision to step up and stop Harden or stay at home on Capela. But the Warriors still did a pretty good job defending in that situation.

From what I recall, the Rockets stopped using Capela to set the pick pretty much from the outset. Thus, the decision of stop or stay is one that the main Warrior's big, ie Draymond, had to make quite frequently, as the Rockets were fishing for mismatches and shying away from him guarding the perimeter. This is the same reason why LMM was unplayable, since the Warriors were basically leaving him open and crowding the paint, further exacerbating things for the Rockets drivers.

exactly. i do not understand the infatuation with CC. Yea he improved and is getting better. But DJ is just a better player than CC imo. And CC was cute at the rookie scale... but no thanks for such a useless luxury then it comes to GS at the max.

If DJ wants to play with us... he will opt in, buyout and then come. Or just decline and come for what we offer him MLE? Then i am all for it.

CC in my opinion is still a softy. I do not want to pay him $100 mil to continue to develop when he can get DJ for a fraction of that and someone who is already better and still in his prime.

its funny how someone who is considered elite at defense and not soft can't even average a full block a game. In fact at 77 games and over 30 mins a game, thats absolutely pathetic for a "defensive center"

people are fooled miserably by houseofhighlights and espn

The #1 rule for adding players this year should be: Can he defend guards when isolated? Come playoff time, anyone who can't will end up on the bench next to Anderson.

if he's willing to sign for the MLE you gotta take that deal and S&T capela for a forward.

if we have DAJ, the clippers could use a young center. we could do a S&T for tobias harris.

I think a more traditional banger center, such as DJ will still be needed to tackle bigger teams like NOLA, but yeah, in general, the league is moving more and more towards the GSW model of switch everything and everyone. That's why adding Lebron (among many other reasons) would fit so well with the Rockets. He just fits in perfectly and would take us to another level.
