How stupid is Paul Manafort? Encrypted apps don't prevent the recipient of a message from ratting you out. And considering that Mueller already knows much more than he's letting on, no witness is going to participate in perjury to protect someone like Paul Manafort.

I don't want to defend Rudy, but now I think he is acting as part of Trump's legal team, so what he says might be dictated by that. Either way, Rudy is awful and has been awful for a long time.

I think it's pretty clear that he is. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, the odds are good that it's a duck. I picked a duck for the analogy because of the Ensign's moniker.

 

Sessions was instructed to recuse himself.
Rosenstein was instructed that it was OK to NOT recuse himself.

Well, I initially used the word "stupid" instead of "partisan" but felt it was too harsh, so I edited it.

I don't think Rosenstein recusing himself would be the end of the world for the integrity of the investigation, and actually might make some sense. The Solicitor General then would take over since Rachel Brand left (because she knew she might be in this position), and the Solicitor General is 100% a GOP Alumni, but one that that the background & merit to objectively run the probe with credibility and based on facts even though this guy is a well know Conservative. He's kept out of the political spectrum thus far which would make him more credible than Sessions, or Rosenstein when the final indictments start to fall & the DOJ has to sign off.



I also don't know if it is such a great thing for Trump if Rosenstein steps aside because of the truth which is the fact that Trump made him a witness to obstruction when he likely used him to give credibility to the firing of Comey which I would be 99% sure Trump misled or lied to Rosenstein about the pretense. He likely went to Sessions who went to Rosenstein who was asked for an evaluation of Comey & any wrongdoings which led Rosenstein to say that the mishandling of the Clinton email investigation which was then used as a pretense for firing Comey which Trump later confessed publicly that it was NOT the case.

So if Rosenstein comes out as a witness and states how he was misled, or frankly lied to about the directive from Sessions & Trump on Comey's performance, that could be really bad news in the Obstruction case.

I just don't see how removing Rosenstein really affects the probe that much unless a Trump sycophant can somehow take over to derail the Justice Department, the Mueller probe, and the SDNY in its entirety.

Getting a sense this is a shift in trump's defense... suggests there is growing acknowledgement there is evidence of criminal activity... and instead of the "no crime existed" defense its now a "trump is being framed of the crimes" defense.
