Trumps trade war is all for show to the US voter and just another way to try and gain leverage so countries and businesses come crawling to his feet to kiss the ring and offer pay to play agreements to get back to normal business with the US. He’s trying to do the same thing with our allies that he’s already been doing with China. This guy is trying everything he can to F up a good economy only because he wants to enrich himself and his daughter wife.

I saw Bernie Sanders got quite the ovation on Bill Maher.

This is a guy who said he would tear up NAFTA, completely rewrite all major US trade deals, and impose his own tariffs on foreign steel.

That kind of hypocritical nonsense (from Maher's illiberal crowd) is absolutely driving this country apart. Trump hate is so contrived

Come back to reality, guys. We need you. This country needs you to be clear minded. If you supported Sanders, you can support Trump.

World leaders overreact and the illiberals bite it. Yikes!

You'd think that steel account for like 40% of US GDP if you went off of their overreactions.

Trump aide: Canada trade row a 'family quarrel', Trudeau overreacting

A senior aide to U.S. President Donald Trump described trade frictions with Canada on Sunday as a “family quarrel,” and brushed aside concerns expressed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

And just to reiterate, the US has placed tariffs on China's steel imports.

BTW, this occurred last year. So thanks for the delayed reaction, everyone.

    ___

U.S. slaps duties on Vietnamese steel originating from China

The U.S. Commerce Department on Tuesday slapped steep import duties on steel products from Vietnam that originated in China after finding they evaded U.S. anti-dumping and anti-subsidy orders.

    ...

Although the product was processed in Vietnam to be made corrosion resistant or cold-rolled for use in autos or appliances, the Commerce Department agreed with the claims of American producers that as much as 90 percent of the product’s value originated from China.

    ...

The decision followed a European Union finding in November that steel shipments from Vietnam into the EU also circumvented tariffs.

The Commerce Department said that after anti-dumping duties were imposed on Chinese steel products in 2015, shipments of cold-rolled steel from Vietnam into the United States shot up to $295 million annually from $11 million.

I'm not sure if you intended to reply to me, but here is another similar story.

US launches anti-dumping case against Chinese aluminum producers using rare aggressive tactic

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has used the powers of his department for the first time in 20 years to self-initiate antidumping duty and countervailing duty cases against the People's Republic of China.

The investigations launched Tuesday cover more than $600 million worth of imports of common alloy aluminum sheet from China. Commerce officials explained to CNBC the investigations were self-initiated under the authority granted to the secretary under the Tariff Act of 1930.

Oh well if a Trump aide defended Trump's unconstitutional practices then surely the liberals overreacted. I would never have said a single bad word about the unconstitutional action if I had known a Trump aide had agreed with Trump's actions. Good thing you cleared that up.

“I think he’s overreacting,” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said of Trudeau on the “Fox News Sunday” program
    _______

    Interesting viewpoint from Mr. Kudlow.

Putin's investment in Trump just keeps paying dividends. Sure Putin has to be pleasantly surprised at how much better this deal gets each day.

Bernie has never implied tarrifs and artificially proping up one industry at the determine of dozens of others is stupid if your goal is job growth.

Far more industries employ workers that use steel and aluminum in their manufacturing proccess than there are steel and Al producers that employ workers.

It's so blatantly dumb that anyone defending it is trolling or has no basic grasp of manufactering in this country .

so you support unilateral free trade?

If Bernie has never implied it is stupid, does that mean he thinks it is a good idea like CJ said? I don't follow Bern's policy.

Is everything in binary terms for you?

It's either ridiculous tarrifs that have a precident of never working in the modern global market or unrestricted free trade?

You can have nuanced issues with NAFTA without shooting a load of tarrifs indiscriminately.

And I've never been a hardline Bernie supporter. I appreciate his genuiness but he has issues with nuance in his ideas like Trump but obviously to a much lesser extent.

You made the case for unilateral free trade here

"Bernie has never implied tarrifs and artificially proping up one industry at the determine of dozens of others is stupid if your goal is job growth."

unless I misunderstood. Tariffs protect vested interests, otherwise you are better off dropping all tariffs unilaterally.

The EU has some really crap tariffs inside their customs union. Tried buying a japanese fountain pen in the UK once. Tariffs are pretty popular.

What is Bern's position again? the wording was a little weird it sounded like "he never implied it was stupid" which would be a free trade position and the opposite of what I just found online.

SANDERS: I do not believe in unfettered free trade.

Something people are missing is we are currently in negotiations on NAFTA. This tariff is an attempt to further liberate trade markets.

Til tarrifs are the only mechanism for mitigating run away free trade.

Are you using sarcasm here or...

I don't understand what you mean exactly on your key points so I'll just say CR has a good point on Bernie's protectionism being cheered and boo Democrat Larry Kudlow's protectionism.

Probably because Bernie's "protectionism" doesn't have anything to do with tarrifs?

I don't understand how you don't get that part?

Kudlow's previous views on trade are irellevent now as he is a talking price for the Trump adminstration who are unabashed protectionists(unless it deals with foreign entities making deals with Trump's private business interests ofcourse).
