https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/02/sports/redskins-cheerleaders-nfl.html Yikes, y’all about creepy. Basically these cheerleaders went out of the country and the team officials took their passports to force compliance on the trip. They surprised them by making some of them do nude photo shoots where suitholder and sponsors showed up to ogle them and let the sponsors pick a few of the girls to go clubbing with.
Pet-peeve of mine. That tweet you posted is a click to a tweet of the source article. Here's the full breaking story from the NYTimes ... complete with pictures of the photo-shoot settings, and much more info, but most importantly, imo, credit for the writer ... https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/02/sports/redskins-cheerleaders-nfl.html?smtyp=cur&smid=tw-nytimes
This is pretty cringe-worthy, though (without reading the full story) I tend to think there were some safety reasons to take the passports. What makes me extremely uncomfortable is that they had them do a topless shoot while allowing people to watch. This will likely spark some change in the NFL cheerleading world.
i don't follow the nfl (save for when the texans are good, which is never), but it seems like every time i read the name, it's always some issues. are they the worst run pro sports league in the world?
Cheerleaders whose job is all about being sexualized on the sidelines during football games, albeit consensually, are complaining that they were sexualized somewhat consensually. When asked to do a photo shoot topless, they could have said no if that crossed a line for them. Edit: What the Redskins did was wrong. The cheerleaders were complicit in the decision to do a topless photo shoot. If they were concerned that random people would see them topless, they should have said no. If they had not considered that, they profoundly lacked circumspection of the situation. I do not see this as a black and white issue.
Yeah, power dynamics don't really exist. Being in a foreign country, your passport confiscated by your employer and your job on the line would have no impact.
The cheerleaders who said no to topless photos were fired on the spot? If so, good for them. Their lawyers will be contacting the Redskins shortly.
Even if I had all the money in the world, I can't see myself wanting to go ogle in the background at a cheerleader while she poses for a nude photo shoot. That's a little creepy for me. And kind of sad and pathetic, actually.
This and the news about their low pay recently is probably the first two steps to making cheerleaders go the way of the F1 grid girls. Deemed too sexist too exist.
Everyone involved in any sanctioning of this should be fired immediately. If for nothing else, then because it speaks to a complete lack of common sense.
