Well yes, Kanye did say that slavery for 400 years sounds like a choice to him. He’s been backpedaling on Twitter ever since.

In your opinion, what is Kanye saying?

In my decade of research about West/Central African societies as well as the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, I haven’t come across any reputable source that shows someone volunteering to make that journey. It is true that in some societies that political dissidents and debtors were sold/traded to Europeans but this was hardly a choice on the part of the person traded.

this has nothing to do with the thread, but im genuinely curious...

what ties to you have to the rockets, houston or texas in general? did you grow up in houston? do you live there now? not trying to be snarky...i really want to know what brought you here.

as for kanye - dude is an unintelligent, childish, narcissistic attention w**** (just like trump) - any time spent trying to dissect what he is saying is a waste of time. i doubt he even knows.

why didn't our jewish brehs just quit working free for the Pharaohs. Carrying stones to build fancy triangles doesn't seem like much fun to me.

You're disassociating the idea that taking the debt wasn't a choice. It was a choice and it was understood slavery was a consequence.

In which particular society was slavery a punishment for debt?

From what I’ve read, the debtors were sold not as a punishment, but because they presented an opportunity. If you have academic sources that suggest something contrary to this I’d be interested in sharing.

Like I said I'm not defending Kanye, but I feel like his statement was in support of the abolitionists and revolutionaries that rebelled against slavery like Harriet Tubman and Nat Turner who made a decision not to accept the cards that were dealt to them in their time. Freedom of death but they refused to accept being enslaved

To say "Sounds like a choice" is so ridiculous and I'm disappointed to see people try to rationalize it for him after the fact.

Yes, slaves "chose" to continue in slavery after they were beaten to bloody pulps, watched their children beaten to bloody pulps, their wives gang raped, etc. Many rebelled, ran away and were brutally punished, tortured and killed. Roving "militias" patrolled the country side looking for those slaves who didn't "choose" to continue in slavery and brutalized them. Hell they brutalized them even if they just happened to too far from home.

So yes, give Kanye credit for his brilliance. African slaves CHOSE slavery and he should guffaw about it. Had they chosen the only other alternative there would be no Kanye West at all today.

Throwing this out there for the benefit of the group. The overwhelming majority of the people taken during the Trans -Atlantic Slave trade were not sold “by their own people”. There were no “blacks/Africans” as we know them today.

I'll be interested to see what people say 100 years from now on this message board about slavery. (In the hypothetical world where people are still on message boards.)

Maybe AI will have this conversation as they ruminate on whether to wipe out humanity.

The Lost Cause AI will argue then that slavery is an inappropriate way to describe it as the New Era Lost Cause reasoning in 2118 will be that "slavery" was really just the first form of communism in America. Blacks were "pooling their resources" with whites and they all shared the land equally.

Well we don't know the descendant blood line of Kanye, his great great great grandfather on his mother or father's side could have been a slave owner. All I saying is that the in the spirit of the underground railroad, people found a way. If you are being oppressed don't accept the oppression just because its the norm, rise up, freedom or death. I'd rather be with my wife and kids in heaven than on a plantation in shackles with bruises and bone deep wounds on my back

Cool. What if your wife and kid are alive? They'll kill you and rape your wife every day for the rest of her life and sell your daughter to someone who will do the same to her.

Come on big brave man, rise up! Go to heaven and wait while your family deals with the consequences.

Ugh... this is the ugliness of what happens when people try to carry water and interpret ignorant statements by someone people think speaks in code when they really are just ignorant.

If he is artfully inarticulate on purpose, shame on him for stirring up nastiness that divides.

If he is just inarticulate and ignorant, shame on us for giving it life.

Either way... just stop giving it life.

I hear what you are saying, we can't play what if with that ****. slavery was appalling and yeah we can say what we would do in hindsight. All I know is if I were alive then and I had a wife and a daughter, I'd be trying to find a way out. But what Kanye said was incredibly irresponsible and immature. You adjusted my point of view dude, I'm not even trying to be sarcastic, the imagery you put in my head painted the picture that someone needed to paint to Kanye before he said that **** publicly. We need to forum our thoughts and measure our words.

Artfully inarticulate? No, he's just plain inarticulate. He makes a living writing songs?

Wait don’t tell me people are still buying into this “black people rolled over and accepted slavery” myth.

Once I’ve completed my tasks for the day, I’ll come back and provide a figurative mountain of evidence to the contrary.

I’m going to assume you haven’t read anything about slavery outside of things presented in high school.
