Hi Guys, Got a quick question. I have normal Texas license plates on my car. I was wanting to get some form of the black ones. Myplates.com is the site where you order the plates from and you have the option of just picking the look of one or getting a custom message. I want just a colored version. My question is when I order a set I know I will get a new random license plate number. What do I do then? Do I need to pay a new registration fee again? My plates are up in July, does it make sense to get the plates and then register them? If so do I have to go to the tax assessor’s office to do this? I spoke to a lady on the phone at myplates.com and she has no clue about anything. She said you can buy plates at any time even without a car, but how they are registered is between me and the state of Texas. She knew nothing and wasted 4 minutes of my life. People who have done this, what is the process when you have existing plates? Do they give you the same random umber you already have? Print new ones to match your existing number? Thanks in advance.
I did this a while back. The car drowned in Harvey soon after. So probably black plates are bad luck. But, as I recall, I had to go pick up the custom plates at some government building and they updated the registration at that time. But my memory is a bit vague.
Op, I called the number. The entire conversation took 2 minutes and 26 seconds. I didn't ask about the plate number, but you do have to go in and pay a $7.00 transfer fee. No new registration needed. They were very helpful, prompt, and friendly. Try the number i posted. I hope it helps.
Will I have to pay additional registration fees when I pick up my plate? Possibly. When you buy a one-year plate, additional fees may be collected at your County Tax Assessor-Collector to establish a single expiration date for both the specialty plates and your vehicle registration. They may have to prorate either your vehicle registration fee or your plate fee to synchronize your vehicle registration period with the first annual period for your plates. This fee may include up to an additional 12 months of plate fees in addition to your initial plate purchase fee for a new vehicle with a two-year registration. For 3-year plates, additional fees could appear in your 2nd year registration renewal notice from the TxDMV. For 5-year plates, additional fees could appear in your 4th year registration renewal notice from the TxDMV. What about renewal of my specialty plates? Your specialty plate renewal is handled by the TxDMV and your local County Tax-Assessor Collector office, as part of your annual vehicle registration process and form you receive from them. The end of your specialty plate term is a great time to decide if you want a new My Plates and message, or to keep the one you have. Because your life changes, so should perhaps your plate and message. I have black plates on my car and when I ordered it I got a new plate number. When I went to renew my registration next year, it included the fees for a regular registration + the additional fees (50) for specialty plate for the next year. I don't know why I am not doing a 5 year term! This is my 6th year. Fk. I need to call and see if I can get it switched.
