In honor of this offensive foul called against Chris Paul:

I'd like to propose that the NBA retroactively fine Ned Beatty for this assault on a mountain man.

I can see why refs called that, but they got away with a lot on running at our guys.

could you please elaborate on how you can see why the refs called that, because i cannot conceive any part of the rulebook that would warrant an offensive foul call on that play smh

If I hit the car in front of me, I'm at fault. Doesn't matter how abruptly the driver stopped.

This is not traffic. Harden and CP3 have a history and reputation so they figured he purposefully tried to get a call in Westbrook. Which he did slightly. You cannot deny that.

So what? Who cares about history and reputation? That has no bearing on the game or play in question and shouldn’t.

Cp3 aggressively swipe throughs while in the bonus. He goes out of his way to initiate contact.

So what? It’s a dagone defensive foul.

The op is clearly 100% a defensive foul. It doesn’t matter what the ball handler does, you can’t just run into him from behind.

A foul is a foul is a foul.

You seem to be arguing why the refs called it, but not why the call is correct. Two different things.

Nope, you seem to create something that isn’t there. He called it on CP3 exactly because of what I just said. It’s another thing whether he was right or not. It’s no conspiracy, it looked like CP3 wanted to get a foul called on Westbrook by sticking out his ass and he got the middle finger stuck up there ;)

Refs do and in full speed I understand why the ref called that on CP3. The calls on Tucker and non-call on PG13 throwing out his elbow on the baseline who got the and1 where much worse calls.

Harden does this all the time, getting in front of a defender and slowing down. Should they start calling that on Harden?

This is just more proof that there's no consistency in the way refs call fouls, and it varies from team to team and even from player to player.

In the playoffs, it is probably a non-call as any decent ref would probably let the players play, especially in late game situations.

I understand why the ref called it, but I also understand it’s a wrong call. I understand it is likely to be called a foul on the Westbrook positioned player 19 out of 20 times.

There where a lot of wrong and egregious calls this past game. Mostly favoring okc.

At the end of the day it was wrong. It was a bad call. It was a good tech from the union president. This is likely the only time we will ever see this called because it’s a clear defensive foul.

    What are you arguing?

You understand why they called it but agree it’s wrong?
You understand why they called it but think cp3 is wrong?
You understand why they called it and think it’s an offense foul?

zach zarba also has a history and reputation of relishing getting to stir up the home team with bs calls (his stats indicate he's probably the last ref you want to see if you're the home team). witness his quick tech on paul immediately after this bs call.

Don’t give them ideas. Players slow down in front of defenders running back on defense all the time. I rarely
ever see the refs call an offensive foul unless the offensive player is moving and B-lines their body laterally
in the path of the defender “intentionally.” CP3 was standing still....Westbrook encroaching on Chris Paul’s space.

Guys move laterally to avoid defender in front of them and get run over. Foul on player that runs over
    the offensive player from behind.

Based on the rules as they stand, I think the proper interpretation of this play is NO call. Calling something every time two guys have contact is exactly the root of the problem.

THIS particular foul is just another version of a guy pump-faking and the defender gets in the air and lands on him. It's an OOPS on the defender for 'biting' on the move, or being too close. Guards do this "slow down" move to bait over-active defenders the very same way that pump-fakes are done under the basket. If you're going to be a flailing freight-train of a defender, prepare to get your due.

The #1 piece of evidence damning Westbrook on this play is that his feet have left the ground. I think that's enough for the case to be closed.

In my perfect world? NO call if Paul retains possession of the ball. Foul on Paul? BS. A foul on Westbrook here would also be dumb, in my opinion. I wouldn't like it if it happened in reverse. Refs have to stop rewarding baiting, yes, but they also can't reward overplaying like OKC was doing the entire second half.
