My guess is Giles is the closer, but he won't replace a better pitcher if the better pitcher is available and/or still has something left. I'm a little surprised Hinch had Peacock go three, but I like it. I believe Hinch places a significantly higher value on having a lead in the 9th than having his best relief option be the closer.
yeah we should probably know by now the traditional ways aren't necessarily going to be the way for Hinch. I was just wondering, since i was surprised by not seeing him in a 1 run game close opportunity
Prior to Springer breaking out in the World Series, I thought Hinch was in the running for MVP of the playoffs.
He has an arm that can do it, as he was accustomed to starting.... not every time, but with an off-day tomorrow and with him having full command of his pitches, this was definitely the right call. I actually thought them converting Devo to a 1 inning guy was also doing him a disservice as he too had an arm that was once accustomed to starting... but turns out the increased work load was not as well handled by him, so they’re going to back off on that plan. Peacock has become the new Devo... and our version of Andrew Miller (until there’s an injury, and he then becomes a starter again).
I was joking half way through last season when I posted "where we're going we don't need closers." Hinch took me seriously. he obviously reads the boards. Actually that has always been his philosophy since day 1, that there is no definite closer role, which is why it frustrated me when he did the opposite. This was even before even acquiring giles.
Yep. When the Padres series starts, Giles and Sipp will have had no in-game pitching for four straight days.
Astros on a 138 win pace, but they are going to have play a little better to win 120 games before losing 20.
Why, cause his bullpen relief options were garbage and he he rode the hot hand in Peacock, McCullers and Morton in multi-inning save situations? He had no other reliable choice. His hand was dealt and I, for one, wont give him that much credit for it.
Not in the least bit. Hinch isn't afraid to go against the grain and let a guy who's going good stay in. Peacock was dealing and they have a day off tomorrow. It has nothing to do with Giles.
they are the ones hung over from the series and not the stros. they cant take the pressure of their closing championship window.
Out of curiousity, what do you think does make a good manager? Can you give us some examples of good managers?
The same Josh Reddick hitting .350 right now with a .1100+ OPS? Same guy who had a great year last year? Love Tucker but people need to slow their roll...he’s not a better MLB player than Reddick at this moment. Regardless, he should be replacing Fisher so I’m not sure why the dig against Reddick is needed here.
yeah reddick was a bit frustrating in that ws run but you can't deny he's one of the hou's best of's and someone you should be able to trust to eventually get out of a bit of a slump.
Yeah that Yankees series and the WS for him was brutal (he wasn’t bad against the Sox) but I’m not going to write him off because of it and he was an integral part in us getting there. He’s a solid player - 3.5 WAR players don’t grow on trees and he seems to be a popular guy in the clubhouse.
