Context matters. I didn't really agree with Obama's statement but this was also pre-Crimea and obviously before Russia went all out trying to get Trump elected. Maybe if Trump didn't constantly act like Putin's puppet then the detractors wouldn't have as much of a leg to stand on with regards to Trump being a Russian stooge, but that certainly isn't the case. Our internet troll president goes after everyone: Xi Jinping, European leaders, politicians even from his own party, but any time Putin's name comes up he curls up like a little b*tch who knows that his sugar daddy (Russia) is watching his every move.

It seems like you can't pick between the "Russia threat is a hoax" argument and the "Obama was too stupid to see what a threat Russia is" argument. It looks like you want both, but they are kinda mutually exclusive.
Russia has never attempted to interfere in an American election the way they did in 2016. I get it that you don't care about our sovereignty but you shouldn't be upset that other folks are concerned.

Putin was still a bad actor but there was no reason to believe he’s not someone who doesn’t want to rule the world and destroy Democracy. There was indication that self interest and business/economic issues were more central to Putin’s agenda.
