The prevalence of this attitude is exactly what the powers that be want.

Facebook certainly has crossed the line with some of their behavior (i.e. scraping Android call/text historical records, and helping Cambridge Analytica). That being said, if you are a social media user, I don't think deleting Facebook is the answer in regards to keeping your personal data to yourself. There is no way to use a social platform and not share your personal data. That is like being mad at Google for knowing your search history if you are using them as your search engine. If people truly don't want any of their data out there, they need to pretty much stop using anything online. You see the #deletefacebook movement trending but many of those same people are content using Instagram or WhatsApp (both are owned by Facebook). And if you never use Facebook, then by all means go delete it and I don't know why you wouldn't have already deleted it before the latest controversy.

I'm not excusing Facebook's bad behavior but I do believe there is some paranoia from the public about platforms/apps like Facebook having your user data. In reality, many companies probably do questionable things with your user data. Google scans your gmail to help build your user profile but there is no #deletegmail movement. Facebook just happened to get caught, and caught doing something inexcusable (Cambridge Analytica) and something that sold a strong media narrative. That being said, there should be some sort of user data regulation in the US similar to the EU (look up GDPR) which makes it more transparent what type of data companies are tracking and when you are granting them permission. Also, only relevant data is allowed to be collected instead of broad scrapes where companies get all your data and store it indefinitely.

If you are carrying a smartphone with gps that's connected to the internet...you are being tracked someway or the other.
People have so many apps that are using their location without them knowing. I have helped turn it off for multiple people to save battery (ex. coupon apps).

I deleted snapchat because it was wasting my time. I have been on instagram for a year and I feel like I should delete it.
I have a shell facebook profile with just my name so I can login to random apps like flipboard.
Whatsapp is useful to talk to people when you are traveling.

Mint & Venmo - knows my spending habits
Netflix & imdb knows what i watch
Lastpass - knows all my passwords
Kayak - knows where i travel to
Pacer - knows how much i walk a day
    Yelp/opentable knows where i eat
    Spotify knows my music
Google knows everything because it all comes to gmail/chrome/google photos/maps

Otherwise than not blasting your life on facebook...how do we truly escape all this privacy concerns? You can't. Just be aware of it and do what you can to minimize it.

Remember: if the service is free, you are the service
