I deactivated my account several months ago after years of barely using. I realized that none of the friends I am closest to - the friends who call/text after big life events, who I talk about the NBA with, who I see socially - were active on it anymore. A few had even deleted their accounts. Instead of seeing posts from the people I find most interesting, I began to exclusively see posts from people I stopped talking to immediately after high school. It just wasn't interesting anymore.

Once I combined that feeling of pointlessness with the recent revelations of Facebook's role in the world over the last few years, it was easy to deactivate. All in all, Facebook is a net negative on society.

facebook is useful if you're far away from home to connect with your family and friends.

Its most successful surveillance and spying apparatus in the history of human civilization. It got that way by people thinking it was for connecting to family and friends unfortunately.

But can't you just text/email or, shockingly, call them? That's what works for me.

I'm not going to say that i'm too smart to be swayed by advertising that is targeted specifically towards me, but I do feel I'm too cynical. And if anyone wants to spy on my boring life.........more power to them.

The fact is that they shouldn't be allowed to. That's the same as people saying, "I don't care if the government spies on me. I got nothing to hide."
