Wont work. You're going to need cap room to sign our drafted rookies and to sign extensions.

Oh...okay. Then what about dropping the $5M price tag for backup QB to $2M?

How much cap room do the Texans need for extensions?

My bad, I hadnt seen that. Waddle it is then.

    Waddle/Fleming
    Wilson/Bennett?
    Gaines?

I think OT and TE could be had in FA along with extending Clowney, but Gaines is just added awesomeness, the draft is REALLY DB deep.

Im by no means an expert, but from what Ive heard/read its going to take about half of our remaining cap to sign rookies and potentially get JD an extensions as others have suggested. 7 rounds of drafts routinely cost a franchise about 7-8 mil on average (480,000 x number of picks). Of course with a team like the Browns, that number jumps up significantly because of the amount of high draft picks in this years draft.

As others have mentioned here already, the Texans might be done with any big names for the time being - setting their sights on the draft and better valued contracts to fill out the depth

I'd imagine a lot, Clowney will command a huge price tag.

What did Clowney make last yr, because when you combine what he made and cutting Allen, I think you still have the money to add one big ticket FA and still do the Clowney extension.

I could see that happening, it would be a good middle finger to his former team who spent a ton in the offseason and brought in WR's only to cut him. If he could then go to a division rival and win the division the next year it would be some pretty sweet revenge.

Yeah but I don't think they want to do just one more big ticket FA guy, I think they want to leave their options open because they don't know what the draft will look like. At this point they have plenty of needs and their draft position is weird. I think they will extend Clowney and then save almost all of the rest of their cap for after the draft when they know what the team looks like at that point. Right now any hole could potentially be filled in the draft.

Another factor is that the Texans have a pretty high priority when it comes to picking up players that are cut in camp. They need cap space in order to use there.

Our current rookie pool is about $4.8M if we stay put.

Clowney's extension wouldn't take effect this year unless they tear up the 5th year option and start his new deal immediately, which I don't see them doing. He's already slated to make $12.3M this season so any raise wouldn't be all that significant in terms of effecting this year's cap.
