Yes, good point. It's a solid deal that terminates way before his 'old' years.

Miracles will not cease happening this off-season. Altuve getting a $151 million dollar extension is a huge win for Astros. That's basically same as Hosmer except Alltuve is two to three times the player.

I basically give up on figuring out this off-season. Been off huge high and low on salaries. It did not seem likely Altuve would take a discount, again. Kudos to the Astros for be willing to go 5 years.

I don’t think Altuve is necessarily subject to an automatic decline as he ages. Look at Pete Rose, he was still very productive into his late 30s. Altuve is a hitting machine. Even if he gives up power later on, I think he could still slap 200 hits a year with less power. If he maintains his average, or slightly declines he could have 2500-2700 hits by age 34, barring injury.

The amount a player declines isnt predictable. But its safe to say that his will be less at 35 than it would have been at 37 or 38. After making 151M, he may just decide to stay after 2024 on a different and more affordable contract.

That's an insane amount. Let the fireworks begin for Harper and Machado. Was expecting a deal closer to $25m a year for altuve based on Cano's deal, and with free agency numbers being so low this year, I figured that was a fair number. I expect Harper to fetch $35m a year or maybe more.

The blowback good news for the Astros as well is that it might be a bit harder for other teams to sign their top tier guys on the cheap.

$25M/year was a 10 year deal and starting a year later in life. Trout is getting $34M/year right now. Yoenis Cespedes' deal from last offseason was 3 years for $90M. FWIW, Machado & Harper are not better than Jose Altuve. They'll be just entering their prime ages, so they'll get more years.

At the very least we will have Altuve and Correa together for the next four seasons with Bregman and atleast three seasons before Springer becomes a FA. Pretty certain I read he’s not open to extension talks and wants to test the FA market, which is fine. Today is a great day for Astros fans.

Starts after the 2019 season, when he would have hit free agency and runs through the 2024 season

2 years remaining on current contract: 13mil
    5 year extension starting 2020: 151mil

    164mil / 7 years = 23.43mil/yr

Steal of the damn century for top player in MLB.

His next 2 years are 6 million and 6.5 million

It ends up being 23.36 million per year
