Orange man: " How do you get all your people to fall in line for a tremendous parade? I totally loved all the old godzilla movies" Rocket boy: " That was Japan. You promised Jordan would be here! " Orange man: You don't have to disarm but if you say you do, the entire world will be talking about you. Highest ratings." {conversation gets lost in beautiful translation]
This is a dangerous idea. The North Koreans have desperately wanted to meet a sitting US president for decades because they believe that doing so signals that they've "made it" as a nation. An American president visiting Pyongyang means that they've been brought there on DPRK's terms, not the US'. They will milk this for all its worth internally and it'll be seen as a natural outcome of their nuclear pursuit. They will say that their acquisition of nuclear weapons has brought to them to the table with the other major nations of the earth. There was a NYT story this week reporting on the meeting in Pyongyang between Kim Jong-Un and the South Korean delegation. Nearly all of the South Koreans were surprised at Kim's political acumen; he reportedly didn't insist on the South Koreans and Americans ceasing their joint military drills like the North Koreans have always done. He put de-nuclearization on the table for discussion. If his goal was to lure Trump to Pyongyang, he may have succeeded.
And so well timed... with all the talk about school gun violence, Stormy Daniels, and the Russian investigation... must have been just a coincidence.
Anyone trusting this buffoon-in-chief in dealing with NK without destroying our alliance with South Korea (or worse) has not been paying attention. He is wreckless.
I don't know if this is a good idea either way. I just came to read the Trump bashing. Pence ignores NK - Trump bashing ensues Trump doesn't ignore NK a few weeks later - Trump bashing ensues
At this point, trump deserves bashing. Often and hard. That said, as you said you came here looking for trump bashing.
I don't think that expressing trepidation with this meeting on North Korean terms should be considered "Trump bashing." I don't really know how to read this summit because it's unexpected and it is the fulfillment of a long-standing North Korean goal: meeting with a sitting president. If there's any "Trump bashing," it stems from the fact that President Trump has not shown he is incapable of substantive diplomatic talks. This is a man who reportedly can't be bothered to read a presidential daily brief longer than one page. He belongs to a GOP that derided President Obama's negotiations with Iran (regardless of outcome, there was outcry from the right that his administration would even speak to the Iranians) and expressed hostility at the very idea of dialogue for years. What can he be expected to say to Kim Jong-Un after he impulsively, unbeknownst to his aides, threatened "fire and fury the likes of which the world has never seen"? I don't disagree with the idea of the summit. Unfortunately, North Korea has played their hand well here. Their brinksmanship has achieved a long-desired policy goal of the Kim family. If there were a more capable president, I wouldn't be so nervous. Instead, President Trump is liable to say anything in this meeting and I fear that his statements won't be grounded in a well-informed understanding of the situation.
I know someone that is a campaign manager for a republican candidate in California. Here's his take on this:
Considering President Trump's repeated admiration for authoritarian leaders, I expect he will become impressed with, and overwhelmed by, the trappings of Pyongyang that he is shown during a carefully constructed summit.
Also important to keep in mind... who are NK's backers. China.... and Russia. China, Russia supportive of Trump's North Korea meeting https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/09/trump-kim-jong-un-meeting-reaction-448758
My boy Dave Dennison about to show the world he's on Dennis Rodman's level. He better get two servings of makgeoli sool bbang or the deal is off.
Does Trump bashing hurt your feelings? IMO he is a POS human being and in no way fit to be POTUS, so he deserves all the bashing.
Pleased with this development. Not very pleased with how ham-fisted it has been executed so far, and I don't have a lot of faith in Trump to actually deliver on a denuclearized NK, but this is a step in the right direction.
I don’t really care if they meet. I will point out that Obama considered meeting with him and the right flipped out. Obama worked out a deal with Iran and the right flipped out. Tribalism at its best. I am sure CNN will label it irresponsible and Fox will compare it to Nixon and that monster Mao meeting. On a side note if Trump really wants to give the finger to Mueller; he should announce he is building a Trump Tower in North Korea if he reaches a nuclear disarmament deal.
