China is not even in the top 10 importers of steel and aluminum to the U.S.

Southern California's public radio station had a discussion about the tariffs today, with guest being economists and a representative for the trade group of steel fabricators-- not steel mills, but companies that make steel beams and other things out of raw steel: https://www.scpr.org/programs/airtalk/2018/03/02/17973/

A point that was brought up is that if Trump's tariff only hits raw steel, and not steel products (like those made by the steel fabricators), then the steel fabricators will lose out as they face 25% higher material cost than their foreign competitors, who can buy cheaper steel and sell their product to the U.S. Then, as domestic steel fabricators lose out to foreign fabricators, domestic raw steel producers will feel its impact, too.

If we also tax the imported fabricated steel products, then unless we charge a tariff for every down-stream product made out of steel all the way down, some domestic producers are gonna face higher material cost and lose some of their market to foreign producers.

And this is not even mentioning retaliation and other forms of negative impact.

Btw Trump(especially when it comes to trade policy and White house in general) reminds me of another character

This was probably like his meeting with his white house economic staff just before his tariff announcement

Don't need a big trade war to suffer. See Bush. Big failure. Why is Trump repeating a known failure?

Apparently, Trump got mad and decided to go forward. Policy based on outburst of anger. That should work out well.

Our president doesn't understand that more American companies purchase steel and aluminum for their end product than American companies that actually produce steel.

In fact, American companies that manufacturer products that incorporate steel or aluminum hire at 30 times the rate of American companies that produce steel and Al.

This is like basic ****. He's shooting ourselves in the foot.

Right, this is why all of the companies - we've already seen giants like Cat, GE, Boeing - that use raw materials to manufacture stuff come out against this.

    Also, this:

According to two officials, Trump's decision to launch a potential trade war was born out of anger at other simmering issues and the result of a broken internal process that has failed to deliver him consensus views that represent the best advice of his team.

    and

There were no prepared, approved remarks for the president to give at the planned meeting, there was no diplomatic strategy for how to alert foreign trade partners, there was no legislative strategy in place for informing Congress and no agreed upon communications plan beyond an email cobbled together by Ross's team at the Commerce Department late Wednesday that had not been approved by the White House.

As a free trade person, I do not like one this at all but it was a campaign promise. I guess it shouldn't surprise me, he has tried to keep more campaign promises than any President in recent memory. Hopefully he is only posturing and saber rattling right now.

As a free trade person, how on earth can you so vehemently support a guy whose entire global economic policy is based on protectionism and tearing up multi-lateral trade agreements?

very astute observation; this would incentivize GM to expand their JVs in China

    that may include countries imposing tariffs on Levi jeans, Jack Daniel whiskey, Harley Davidson bikes, Catapillar equipt;
and china imposing tariff on Trump escort services, as well as decreasing their order of Boeing planes in favor of Airbus

What I've read from more than one source is that everyone in the White House was blindsided by this. There was a trade review due to start in 2 weeks, where the pros and cons of tariffs would be hashed out. Since the GOP has been for free trade for decades, it's no surprise that congressional Republicans are freaking out, big business is freaking out, and even the head of the Steelworkers Union, hardly seen as a big proponent of free trade, spoke out against including countries like Canada.

Mr. trump does things without thinking. All the time. It's hardly what you want in the Oval Office.
