You changed my mind, I didn’t realize over the last 5+ years so much money had been raised for supporting gun control.

I would add, we don’t have a sensible and responsible gun interest group. The nra is it and they went rogue and extremist years ago. They have strong influence because there isn’t anyone else.

Seen some of the ads and their speeches?

Everyone pay the same. Ads aren’t same and more importantly in this case, the audience aren’t the same. You said it yourself- single issue voters.

Gun shows are hardly secondary market.

Noteworthy that a large number of major universities are supporting students that engage(d) in peaceful protest against gun violence (in response to schools and school districts that have threatened to suspend/punish such students. Long thread of statements from these schools, but just a few: UCONN, MIT, Brandeis, Northwestern, Northeastern, Indiana, Smith, and Dayton, to name a number of those already announced.

The difference is one set of students are minors and said schools and teachers have a responsibility to these students. They are not being punished for protesting (which you obviously have implied). They are being disciplined for doing it in a manner that goes against the rules, which includes walk-outs, truancy or disruption to class time.

You obviously know and understand this but you're trying to twist and contort this into something that it isn't.

Except the school isn't using the normal punishment for these actions. A normal first-truancy doesn't result in suspension. Yet in some cases, they are bringing down extra punishment.

I would add, we don't have a sensible and responsible anti-civil liberties interest group so when it comes to the issue, no one is sensible or responsible.

Previously I asked... would a student "playing hooky", taking a "senior cut day", or simply taking a "mental health day", or taking a day off for any reason be suspended? My kids took days off from school and don't remember any of them being suspended for it.

The universities that are being mentioned in this thread are making a clear statement against what is clearly a political statement by the schools and school districts stating they would suspend any kid for protesting gun violence in school. I don't need to twist this in any way. And you know it.

Those are all acceptable reasons to not be at school, politicizing a tragedy is not. Universities who accept this kind of stupid behavior will just end up being the next Evergreen.

Again, what you're implying is the school district is trying to stifle their voice and opinion. That is not the case.

As I said, its the schools and teachers job to ensure the students are learning the material and passing classes. This can not happen if kids are not coming to class. When it happens in mass groups, it makes this problem worse. If they are not in class learning the material and passing tests, then this reflects poorly on the teachers and schools. Further, it disrupts the teaching process and adds more work for the faculty. The increased consequences is to show the school is taking this serious and trying to maintain their responsibility to the students.

If a minor wants to protest, they need to do it on their own time or organize it with the faculty.

For some of you to complain so much about the school system, Im surprised you find this behavior from students acceptable. But hey, who cares if the case fits your narrative, right?

Do you seriously believe school districts are pro gun ownership and are retaliating against a student for their belief?

And to clarify, I am talking about High school, not Universities.

The problem is not just about truancy. Its students disrupting class or protesting on or near the school grounds at the street.

If these students were holding pro-Trump rallies during school hours and at the street and one of them should get injured, you would be raging to no end about how irresponsible the school was for allowing the students to this.

The real reason they are triggered about the kids being punished for truancy is that recently the Republicans numbers started drastically improving and they are hoping that they can use the kids to push a gun control message that they know won't go anywhere but could potentially be used as a wedge issue in the midterms or at least used to bash Republicans in certain districts.

Also, it distracts from the fact that the Democrats are preventing a deal on DACA which was what they previously wanted to use as a wedge issue.

    It's 100% about the midterms.

Lets ask those universities standing up for the high school students... btw, at a time when people criticize our youth for being lazy, and being apathetic, between the Parkland HS students and those the universities are taking a stand for I think we are getting a better sense that our future is in good hands...

Yes, I do believe that the few small school districts that threatened students taking a stand against gun violence were trying to make a political point.

And no, I would support students wanted to protest for trump, or to engage in a prayer circle around the school's flag pole, or to make any other statement they felt important. Including statements about gun control and school safety.

For your single example, the district stated no protests, demonstrations or awareness of any kind would be allowed during school hours. Where do you get the idea they are singling out gun protests?

Obviously they are not going to be allowed to protest during class time, so that leaves before, after or during their lunch break.

I really have no problem with this provided its treated equally across the board.

Playing "hooky" (hooky generally being defined as skipping school with no valid reason) is an acceptable reason to not be at school, while exercising a supposed peaceful protest of a politically charged situation is not?

Yeah. A kid "playing hooky" once isn't a big deal really but could be a problem if it happens too often. A student helping a political party politicize a tragedy is not okay.....just as it's not really okay for that political party to use those kids to try and create a wedge issue for primary elections.

Let the kids at least wait till they are out of high school to become puppets of a political party....or at very least do it on their own time.
