I haven’t been consistently watching NBA games very long, in the past it was mostly box scores and only this couple years have I started watching broadcasts regularly, I gotta say I have never seen what JJ did before with pulling the chair defensively on Gibson, is this even done often in the NBA? that’s gotta be high IQ play right there.

It was more common when there was more post ups going on in the league. Which is no longer the case.

Players will often use this trick after their opponent has already tried to aggressively back them down a few times. As DonKnock said, post ups are becoming more and more rare so you don't see it as much, but it's been around for decades.

Here are some examples, with a Joe Johnson sighting at the end.

Joe Johnson’s corner jumper is a big weapon for us.

Let alone his ability to play bigs on defense and hit mid rangers in the 4th.

    Such a good signing.

He looked much better than his first game. Getting comfortable. Where was Wright?

Pretty sure, half the NBA defenders did the same thing to Yao when he was around. An easy trick to neutralize him.

When players were guarding Shaq, they were typically just hanging on for dear life.

Shaq was very quick on his feet and could counter. His go to move was to throw his back into you and then shoot a hook before you recovered. It only took one hit for him to get the space he wanted. Shaq didn't have to back down 3-4 times.

Yao, never did this. He used his butt and he wasn't light on his feet. Both those make you susceptible to the pull move.
