Why should he apologize for an honest slip of the tongue? At that point, they are just sounds emanating from his mouth.
Cause he offended people, inadvertent or not. It's the professional and moral gesture. Instead he said he was disappointed in the fans.
The only reason to be offended is if it was intentional. No intention means no offense which means no reason for him to apologize.
I am Chinese and did someone ask me if I was offened? He said something he should not have said and his apology was beyond weak. I could care less what he said or not said. But he messed up. That is all.
If you say a racial slur obviously people are going to be offended. If you bumped into someone on the street because you had your head down are you not going to apologize because it was not intentional? Things can be unintentional that doesn't mean a apology is not warranted. JJ is acting like the people who were offended owe him an apology. He clearly didn't apologize and acted like a dick about it. Seems douchey to me.
I don’t know. Caught between saying “Chinese fans” and “fans from China” and it just came out that way by accident? I don’t agree with your comparison. Physical contact is different from words. Words only cause harm if they carry a particular meaning. In his case, he claims he didn’t even purposely emit the sound “chink”. If you are willing to accept he is being honest, then still demanding an apology makes absolutely no sense.
If a person is saying a foreign word and it sounds oddly like a slur in English — should he be criticized for not apologizing if someone passing by hears it and thinks it was a slur?
If he doesn't want that person thinking he's a racist, then yeah. If he doesn't care what that person thinks about him then no.
So you don’t think it should be enough for him to explain that he was speaking another language and he wasn’t actually saying the word the passerby though he was saying? He needs to apologize as well? IMO, this isn’t any different than Redick being tongue tied and a sound coming out that sounded like the slur but he wasn’t actually saying that word.
How do we know if it was intentional or not? We don't. Only Redick can answer that question. IMHO, could have avoided any misunderstanding by just simply saying "Happy New Year".
The question is, why do you believe Redick is being sincere here? Out of curiosity I did a little research on Redick, and oh boy to say that he has some racialized views is an understatement. https://bossip.com/1287812/white-te...edia-makes-fans-hate-caucasian-ballers-43081/ https://bossip.com/913869/leaked-em...pie-girlfriend-a-dirty-n-word-and-stupid-spc/ https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...os-angeles-clippers-owner-racism-ban/8698265/ He belives White people are under attack - a common grievance narrative of tody's Alt-Right - and 'allegedly' have used racially derogatory terms to refer to Black and Hispanic people prior to this incidence. Also, let's not forget that Redick was widely hated during college basketball days because of his arrogant personality. http://www.espn.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2339265 I'm usually in the 'let's not be overly sensitive' camp when it comes to these kinds of issues, but considering his past, the most likely scenario is that in his head Redick still equates certain ethnic minorities with these terms - which just happen to came out of his mouth unconsciously.
I think the problem comes when he chastises the passerby for thinking he said that slur. An apology doesn't cost anything and it can go a long way towards diffusing a situation.
