Rockets owning all the buyouts is the beginning of the end of the Warriors run. Everybody is seeing this!
Joe gives you another player that can put the ball on the floor and make a play. You probably aren’t going to give him the ball out top and have him create an entire offensive possession too often, but if he’s in the game and the ball find him he provides more than just a catch and if open shoot - if not pass back to Jim or Paul option. Against a close out he can make a move and generate something. This is a good thing just to have another guy (not equivalent to harden or Paul) capable of putting more stress on the defense.
If CP3 is out, we are already screwed. There is no PG who would be available on waivers or via trade who would come anywhere close to doing what he does for us.
ISO joe post ups are money. He really can punish smaller guards especially on the elbow and has a nice face up post game as well. For 5 to 10 minutes a game a gives you a smart vet who can stretch the floor and do bariety if other things
If true it’s mostly because he knows he can get more minutes in Houston as well as the Pringle connection
Worth noting since Johnson has been in the league he has been a part of D’antony’s rise to fame, watched him fall from grace, watched him fall from grace again, watched him fall out of the league, watched him wander around the NBA coaching landscape as an assistant, watched him rise to fame again and now he is rejoining him.
Well the main thing was that Morey wasn't able to move Ryan Anderson. So that wasn't good. I would have been ok with signing Joe Johnson if the Rockets were able to unload Anderson. Now, you keep the under-performing Anderson, then sign Brandan Wright. Next you sign Joe Johnson? Three things. First, The Rockets roster just older. The roster already features Néné and Chris Paul for whom the Rockets gave up a lot to acquire( future all-star Lou Williams who by the way scored 50 points already this season.) Then they sign an aging Joe Johnson whom the Utah Jazz deemed expendable? Morey signs has beens of the Utah Jazz? Second, I am still hopeful that coach Mike D'Antoni and the rest of the coaching staff seriously give Troy Williams at cracking the roster. Ariza is already recovering from his injury yet no sign of Troy Williams still. So signing Joe Johnson would really mean Troy Williams won't even have a chance now at walking on an NBA hardcourt except for shoot-arounds. And lastly, I'm not really high as others I observe are about releasing Tarik Black with the looming signing of Wright. Maybe release Zhoe Qi or Chinanu Onauku or RJ Hunter. But c'mon not Tarik Black. Black had a good game against Denver, and he used prove to be useful when either Capela or Néné are injured. I think even if Wright contributes to the Rockets for the remainder of the season, the playoffs will surely mean a need for a big man(big men). Having Wright AND Black puts less pressure on Capela and Nené. So, Joe Johnson? Is he good? He WAS good. Now, the Utah Jazz are betting no he's past his prime. He's spent. Morey's move? sign the aging veteran. Oh well, roll the dice again, like that trade for Chris Paul which meant trading away Lou Williams. Only time will tell.
First of all, Joe Johnson isn't a move the Rockets made looking toward the future. He is a ring chasing veteran brought in for the current season. His age is inconsequential in this situation. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at you complaining the Rockets gave up Lou Williams for Chris Paul, so let's just move straight past that for your sake. You see, generally teams that don't have a chance at competing, do what's right by veterans and get rid of them so they can sign with a contender for one last shot at a ring. The Joe Johnson signing was for the exact reason so Troy Williams never got a chance at walking on the NBA hardcourt during the Playoffs. Surely you understand why. I don't know about you, but I feel a hell of a lot more comfortable seeing JJ on the court against the Warriors down the stretch than TW. I'd love to hear your rebuttal otherwise. No sign of Troy Williams largely in part because of Gerald Green Light. Seriously, there must be something telling you there's a reason why Williams has not seen the light of day this season. I admit I wanted to see him earlier in the season on the bench seeing rubbish minutes to close games. But I can accept the fact he isn't showing enough in practice to warrant that. I am in agreement about Tarik Black. I'd love for the owner to say I'm fine paying the money in cutting Onauku. He will never be a better player than Black. Saving a million is not worth it in my opinion to give up that end of the bench depth when you just bought the team for billions. You're failing to differentiate a veteran on a team struggling for the 8th spot, VS a team in contention for the #1 seed who will only need his services in spot minutes. JJ's 3 point % his steadily gone up each month this season. You may think he's trash, but I have a sneaking suspicion teams such as the Warriors are worrying about him being wide open on the 3 point line playing next to the MVP and Point God.
Neither Troy or Black deserve minutes ahead of JJ or BW. Both are upgrades to current rosters. And both are trusted by MDA because they are proven. There is time and place to get younger, this is not it.
Another aspect that a lot of people haven't considered with the signing of Joe Johnson is his ability to ISO on smaller players. The Rockets will likely opt to use Joe Johnson as a small ball 4. That means when the Rockets force switches (which they always do), it is no longer just Harden/Paul vs big man defender at the perimeter. The Rockets can optionally get the ball to Joe Johnson in the post against a smaller defender, a skillset that Ryan Anderson lacks. Last year's playoffs are a perfect example of this. Notice how often Joe Johnson takes advantage in the post? Notice how the Jazz would run plays to get Redick switched onto Joe Johnson? If you consider how important ISO plays are in the playoffs, he would be absolutely invaluable giving the Rockets an additional go-to set play. If Paul and Harden are not making their shots over the big men, then they can switch it around and get Johnson to ISO on the smaller defender instead.
I actually am really excited to see how the Rockets match up with the Warriors now. Because there now honestly shouldn't be a situation where the Warriors can exploit Shaun Livingston in the post offensively.
Can I ask a question and I mean it in the most respectful way possible....!!!! WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT MAN......? Troy Williams...???? Gerald Green is a nba veteran and the dude can barley get minutes when someone goes down and you want the coaching staff to give Troy some minutes, you know when it mean when the team is on Win now mode right....?? secondly are you seriously caring or advocating for keeping black..??? and he has proven to be useful when nene and capela is injured, have you watched any games this season..!!!!! the dude can't stay on the floor for more than 5 minutes without getting into foul troubles. come on man, we need to win now.
It is crazy. We basically traded Brown and our choice of a player for an expiring Joe Johnson and Brandan Wright. You can't get much better than that unless you're holding a PlayStation controller in your hand.
