What horrible news. I'm so sorry for Rick and his family, I hope they can find some peace with this tragedy.

Could genuinely be an accident and she wasn't at fault. Plus, she's an 80 year old woman. Would pressing charges really be in anyone's best interest?

80 year old woman at the wheel... may be in everyone's best interest to get her off the road.

No disagreement with you there. But hitting her with criminal charges isn't the best way to do so, we're not even sure she's fully to blame. If I get to that age I hope self-driving cars are mainstream.

If that doesn't happen when we're 80, I'm just gonna make my sugar mama pay for my uber everywhere.

We don't know the details. He may have been looking at his phone and walked right into traffic. Those crosswalks are there for a reason.

So sad, it is tragic and so sudden. I have a 24 yr-old son and need to see him as soon as possible.

There has to be a cutoff for driving way before 80 IMO. I jaywalk all the time Downtown, lots of people do. I get it, not the smartest thing to do, but I still do look both ways and make sure its clear. Id guess Grandma was going pretty quick. RJ lived here you wouldnt think he would be caught up sightseeing to where he didnt even pay attention to his surroundings? This is F'd up on many levels. I cant wait to hear what the further investigation finds. I'm not saying throw Grandma in prison, and I understand the 'bad drivers are bad drivers regardless of age' argument, but I dunno my experience with almost all drivers over 65 has not necessarily been good. Sorry Rick, I hope that he finds comfort in celebrating his sons life and finding peace despite the circumstances.

Damn! It's unfortunate. These things happen so fast. Life is so ****ing short. I work in downtown and I swear, there are some drivers that want to purposely hit you, even when you have the white walking light sign to walk (they are in a rush, they are mad, they are upset, ill, emotional, only god knows etc). You HAVE to be careful at all times. Just because it's your white walk light doesn't mean you're safe at all. It blows my mind when I think about how it can all come down to a split second and EVERYTHING is gone. Your valuables. Your loved ones. You name it. This stuff just really shakes me because I want to do so many things in life, pursue this, pursue that, do this, do that, learn this, learn that, and sometimes as human as we all are, we procrastinate, or make time for other things. And then when it gets too late, or when time flies, you wish you would have done things differently. Whether you want to believe it or not, life is a game. Be careful at all times wherever you are, and whatever you're doing and just try to be the best you can be. We're all just trying to make it out here one day at a time and hope we make it to the next day.

This is terrible... I can't even imagine. I hope coach and family find a glimmer of peace and hope on this tragic day.

Because jail is meant for someone evil who commits a crime.

Being old and not being able to see someone is not a crime albeit very irresponsible to drive as such.

You can make their life hell by suing them in civil court though.

Yeah, that's my first thought. 80 year olds shouldn't really be allowed to drive. My +80 year old relatives don't drive and usually have their younger spouse/child/friend drive for them.

I lost my son last year. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of him for long moments and feel the ache of missing him. The loss of life and all that could have and should have been, it’s a painful reminder that there are no guarantees in this world. It’s natural to feel the need to assign blame and responsibility. It’s an attempt to make sense of something senseless, something that didn’t have to happen. But at some point in the grief there’s a realization that there are both terrible and beautiful things that happen without an understanding of why and that understand will never happen in this life.

My heart breaks for the Adelman family. These are dark days now and for the foreseeable future. Life will never be the same. After losing my own, I still find myself at a loss for words when I meet another parent who’s lost their child. As though each person’s loss is so profoundly unique. Prayers for them tonight...
