The average immigrant of the past decade has a higher rate of obtaining a degree and a proffesional skill than the average native born American.
Is that the only measurement of greatness these days? Does your average immigrant include the undocumented kind? You post that statement a bunch. Do you think you are better than the average native born American?
Just saying The average person attacking immigration are low education and work jobs that don't add a whole lot to the GDP. Where as the immigrants are the ones opening business, creating jobs, and paying lots of taxes. This is a statistical truth. Preventing people from bringing their family other than spouse and kids here is wrong. Your mother and brother aren't distant relatives as Trump describes it. Plus this country needs immigration to stay competitive. It's stupid to prioritize white counties over any other. And merit is code language for race. Did you know that we already have a merit based system and that winning the Visa lottery is hard.
Not surprised, but this exemplifies how political the reactions in the room are. You'd think low unemployment amongst blacks was a good thing, but apparently not.
One of my biggest concerns about trump's SOTU (and much of his focus) on MS-13 while talking about immigration is the misconception that immigrants means gang crime. The fact is that immigrant community is less likely to commit crimes than non-immigrants and that higher concentrations of immigrants actually lower crime in a community. Its has also been shown that undocumented aliens have a low crime rate (of course, oustide of their legal status). MS-13 is a serious problem, just as gang crime and violence is a serious problem. There are an estimated 6,000 MS-13 gang members in the U.S. There are an estimated 1.4 million gang members in the U.S. I am all in favor of law enforcement targeting MS-13 and federal support of these efforts. But connecting the problem of MS13 and gang crime with immigration (illegal and legal) is wrong.
I am a native born American. Wherever you think a mechanical engineer and former Marine grunt fall into is where I stand. I'm not going to label myself. You can do that. Also, yes obtaining a high level skill is a sign of lower crime rates and greater contributions to our GDP and tax revenue. So it is definitely one of the better indicators.
Take away the multiple blatant lies, the hand gestures to get the audience to stand up, the clapping for himself, and the incessant clapping into the mic...it was probably one of the better speeches he's given. Not based on content...not at all based on content...but in terms of almost playing the part for once.
Thats cute. You think mechanical engineering has something to do with wrenching. That's hilarious. Most engineers suck at wrenching. It has nothing to do with our profession. I don't think mechanics are required to learn multivariable vector calculus and differential equations and apply it to fluid mechanics and dynamic systems. Mechanics repair things. Engineers work for Pratt & Whitney designing engines for jet fighters.
Well when police don't document the immigration status of offenders, I am sure it not hard to find a study that agrees with your first take. Do the federal numbers confirm your first paragraph?
Do undocumented immigrants who commit crime but are not asked about their status get counted as citizens in these studies?
If I'm not mistaken they actually do. Even sanctuary cities. Any time they enter a name it runs through ICE database and flags them. The debate in regards to sanctuary cities is the current administration is asking local law enforcement to go above just flagging them and instead also detain them until ICE shows up. I could be mistaken though.
Its hard to find exact stats, but it easy to find some stats that support both sides of the question. Fox, Washington Times, and other right wing news sources present stats that disagree. Those that agree: http://www.politifact.com/texas/sta...aldez-says-unauthorized-immigrants-account-1/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...-crime-is-still-wrong/?utm_term=.e9e15806a8a0 Those that disagree: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jan/26/illegals-commit-crimes-double-rate-native-born-stu/ http://www.foxnews.com/politics/201...-crimes-than-native-born-americans-study.html That said, its still wrong to associate crimes committed by criminal gangs like MS-13 with immigration.
