Republicans cut funding to CHIP in September to make it a bargining issue in the spending bill.

    That is actually disgusting.

It got Trump, Reagan, Bush and Carter elected.... it is politics 101 and both parties are following the same play book for 40 years.

No question banking on the ignorance of the public was instrumental in getting presidents like Clinton, Obama, and Trump elected, it's a tried and true method.

Now that doesn't mean that it's not annoying.

In November the House passed a bill to fund CHIP for 5 more years and Democrats opposed it. Meanwhile, CHIP is still being funded

Funding bill could provide short-term CHIP relief | TheHill

The funding for CHIP is all up to the Democrats now.

GOP just demonstrating a failure to govern, have all three branches, and can't even get all of their votes behind the bill.

Now this is the ignorance I was talking about. There aren't 60 Republican Senators, so there's nothing the Republicans can do without support by Democrats....you know that right? I get what you are saying is going to be the spin, but let's not pretend that it's based in reality.

It is the same crap I heard when Obama was in office and the same lame excuses trotted out by Republicans. The only difference is it is now Democrates using them.

The country is entirely to partisan with a lot of people not caring about the issue or even what position they believe in, only if their “team” won. Often times their team is whom even their social circle or spouse support.

I agree with the ignorance, it seems many don't understand the purpose of the Senate and how it is up to each individual to decide where they will say yay or nay to anything brought forth to them. The GOP is the ruling party, they need to find the 60 votes, period. I thought everyone knew how this worked?

Oh no doubt, and it's that hypocrisy that is annoying. The Democrats are shutting down the government hoping to score political points, and it'll probably work much like it did when the Republicans did the same. The two parties are essentially the same, they just pander to different groups and that's why I get annoyed when people try to act like one of them is morally superior to the other.

But you get how it's disingenuous to suggest that someone "has" the Senate when they don't have a majority required to do anything about the issue at hand right? If this was an up or down vote that needed a simple majority and the Republicans still couldn't get anything done, then you blame them but when you have one party hell bent on being obstructionists, there's simply nothing that can be done about it. Hmm, where have I heard that before?

the best part of this is how everyone's lives will go on as normal and use of shutdown as a threat will no longer be viable

also, it will reenforce how unnecessary and wasteful most of the federal government is

I think it's just a basic understanding how government works. The GOP has the majority, it needs to flip some Dems and can do that by you know...compromising...something our government has been known to do in some forever ago land.

The sad thing is BOTH parties want both CHIP and DACA for the most part, so where is the compromise?

Let's be real Bobby, no one is buying your "I'm just neutral, both parties are bad' schtick. The evidence, in every single post here.

It's alright to be biased, just admit it. You expect the Democrats to compromise but not the Republicans, not how it works.

No votes unless Dreamers stay, CHIP funded, and ACA Subsidies Funded.

    Easy play for the Dems.

What's funny about this is that you had a completely different opinion about this kind of thing the last time it happened. It's funny how perspective can change when the shoe is on the other foot.

As to what you "buy", that couldn't matter less to me. Your subjective opinion is irrelevant compared to objective reality.

The last time the government shut down it was due to a disagreement over the funding of Obamacare and was the fault of the Republicans, this time around, it's the Democrats doing it over a social issue that has nothing to do with government finances. You can either accept that objective reality or you can live in a fantasy world. Either way it doesn't really matter.

If the minority party holds the government hostage every year suggesting they'll shut everything down unless their social platform is furthered, it'll be pretty interesting going forward.....you guys will have to keep flip flopping when it comes to your opinion of this awful tactic depending on who is in power.

LOL! You vastly overestimate the feelings of the American public towards the illegal alien "Dreamers". By all means, I'm loving that the Democrats are willing to go to extraordinary lengths to put their interests ahead of American citizens. It will likely make for a Republican landslide in November.

    Hey idiot Trump voters.

4 Republicans just voted no for the CR. 5. Democrats actually voted yes.

Despite what your right wing echo chamber tells you, the fact is you never had the votes even with your own party.

Yes the Dems filibustered, but why wouldn’t you? Anything that can’t pass with 60 votes shouldn’t pass anyways. That’s a sign it’s bad partisan deal. Even if they didn’t filibuster, you’d still have 4 Republicans vote no.

    .....

Regardless... yes the government is going to shut down but I’m sure they will at least come up with some sort of short term deal to negotiate through the End of the month. The Democrats in the end will allow the government to stay open when the negative of a long term shutdown outweighs deporting massive amounts of Americans. Military folks will get their paychecks and the mail will come at some point. The Democrats are practical unlike the ideologs on the right that you cannot reason with.

Nobody should give Democrats blame for this though. They are doing the right thing to at the very least TRY to not allow a wannabe racist dictator to throw nearly a million people out of the country out of vile racist hatred. One night of a shutdown is well worth the cost of trying to literally save lives.

US govt shutdowns aren't real shutdowns. A real shutdown would have some actual teeth to it...i.e. it would shut it ALL down...no FAA, no military operations, Border Patrol, senators/reps don't get paid, etc. If this shutdown had teeth then then the chances of Congress letting it happen are zero.

Anyway, I lay the blame for this shutdown at the feet of one person. That person's name is Donald J. Trump. Congress had a bipartisan deal worked out last week and Trump defecated all over it.
