Mr M's thread reminded me to pull out the Christmas songs to get in the mood...so I thought, What is your favorite Christmas song or album? I include album in this because I have two full length albums of Chrsitmas songs that rock. Merry Axemas: A Guitar Christmas 1) Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer -- Kenny Wayne Shepherd 2) The First Nowell -- Eric Johnson 3) Amazing Grace -- Jeff Beck 4) Jingle Bells -- Brian Setzer Orchestra 5) Silent Night/Holy Night Jam -- Joe Satriani 6) Joy to the World -- Steve Morse 7) Christmas Time Is Here -- Steve Vai 8) Blue Christmas -- Joe Perry 9) The Little Drummer Boy -- Alex Lifeson 10) Cantique de Noel (O' Holy Night) -- Richie Sambora 11) Happy Xmas (War Is Over) -- Hotei and also the sequel Merry Axemas 2 -- More Guitars for Christmas with Steve Lukather, Neal Schon, Steve Stevens, Stu Hamm, Trevor Rabin, Zakk Wylde, John Sykes, Robin Trower, Al Di MEola, and Ted Nugent really excellent renditions of classic Christmas music for somone who enjoys guitar instrumentals.
I like the alternative Christmas songs... 1) Christmas Eve Sarajevo 2) Christmas Rapping - The Waitresses 3) The 12 Redneck Days of Christmas - Jeff Foxworthy 4) The Night Santa Went Crazy - Weird Al 5) Christmas at Ground Zero - Weird Al
One of my favs as well. I really like the heavy rock/Orchestral combo. Even when bands like Metallica re-do tunes with an orchestral backup. I just like that sound.
Yea, I agree...TSO's Christmas songs are cool. I have those also.. I havent heard the redneck one in a while...
Have a Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives Blue Christmas - Elvis The entire Trans-Siberian Orchestra CD
The song that really puts me in the Christmas mood is.... "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" by Ian Dury and the Blockheads.
Vince Guaraldi's soundtrack to "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is something that I can never get tired of listening to. Everyone is familiar with "Linus and Lucy" (or at least when you hear it), but "Skating" is the best track on that album.
I actually like that song: 1) All I want for Christmas is You - ??? Some lady ??? 2) Santa Clause is Coming to Town - Bruce Springsteen One of my favorite Album's is the Home Alone CD...It's pretty good...
Leon Redbone - "Winter Wonderland" off of this album: http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/product.aspx?pid=9437 Lots of stuff by Nat King Cole Who's the lady that sang "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"?
I agree totally and An Oscar Peterson Christmas is another fave. I like the TSO stuff as well, but here are my faves of both new songs and old classics: Nat King Cole- Chesnuts Roasting on an Open Fire I can't believe he was a chain smoker, because his voice is like buttah, baby! Eagles- Please Come Home for Christmas -the Bon Jovi version doesn't even come close. Cheech and Chong- I don't remember the name of the sketch, but it is funny Paul McCartney- Wonderful Christmas Time.......wonderfully cheesy synths make holiday magic. A song that doesn't put you on a guilt trip like John's Happy Xmas (War Is Over). i seriously challenge to sing along with this tune and not have a huge grin on your face by the time its done. Elvis- Blue Christmas.......They don't call him the King for nothing. Three Tenors- Oh Holy Night (Cantinque Noel) ......These make what to me is one of the most beautiful (but damned hard to sing!!!!!!) carols even more enchanting. Jimmy Buffett- Merry Christmas Alabama...... JB wishes holiday cheer to his birthplace and all points in between while doing some heavy reminscing. Sting- Gabriel's Message.....I'd never heard of this song, but I instantly took a shine to it when I heard him sing it live. Hall and Oates- Jingle Bell Rock.......I've always liked Hall and Oates and to me, their rendition is appropriately bubbly. Alabama- Christmas in Dixie.......I've always thought highly of this group and they didn't let me down with this classic tune. Diana Krall- Santa Claus is Coming to Town..... I've always admired her because she has: a sexy, husky voice that is sweeter than a plate of yams, a great talent on the keys and the sultry looks. On this song, she just tears it down. Jose Felicano- Feliz Navidad.....How could I forget this classic! Bob and Doug McKenzie- 12 Days of Xmas.....2 turtlenecks and a......beer! David Bowie and Bing Crosby- The Little Drummer Boy..... I love Bowie's add-lib thing he sings over the normal carol. Awesome. I forgot to ask you guys with kids, is your shopping done? And where do you hide it? Santa has already done his shopping this year at our house.
Lots of ladies have sung it, but I believe Brenda Lee popularized it. Lou Ann Barton does a kick-ass cover of this song on one of my favorite Xmas albums, An Austin Rhythm & Blues Christmas (available on Amazon ). I have an extensive Christmas album collection (20 albums or so). I'll agree with the votes for Guaraldi, Nat King Cole, Elvis, and Merry Axemas, and I'll put a word in for Etta James: 12 Songs of Christmas. Also, I am not sure where you can find it, but Everclear does an outstanding version of Santa Baby.
