Agreed. Two-Thirds of his minutes are with Anderson and during those our defensive rating pushes up towards 110. But.......once again, what does that say about Capela's defensive impact? Do you really think DJ or Gobert would be just as ineffective defensively alongside Anderson?
That's why I'd rather take Dj if he will take less money than Capela next year. CF overrates Capela and outside of CF, he is underrated.
Cherry picking exceptions is easy to do. Trust me, I can do that all day with on/off defensive plus minus. The existence of exceptions does not mean it tells you nothing. That’s not how statistics work.
Ok, go ahead cherry pick. I asked for an explanation of our defensive rating being better when Capela sits.
Reunite with who? How does this even make sense to anyone? Also just curious, is it your duty to defend every player here on ClutchFans? You still haven't replied back to the PJ Tucker thread and the fact that I called him the worst signing of the Rockets this past off-season while you glorified him as our 3 and D savior against GSW. knote32 probably shares the same mentality as the posters who would not trade Ryan Anderson or Capela for Cousins because we were on a 16 game winning streak (and were the #1 team in the NBA!).
"Defensive Rating" is a function of all the players on the floor. When is Capela in the game, and what is the offensive efficiency of the units he's facing versus the units he's not facing? That matters. And even adjusting for that, there's also statistical noise that makes these numbers unreliable as definitive proof of a player's defensive contribution or lack thereof. Also, I'm not arguing that Capela is some sort of defensive ace, but my opinion of him is obviously higher than your's. Let's put aside the plus/minus numbers and talk specifics. What do you think makes Capela a poor defender?
Slow to react. Not strong enough to carve out his own defensive space. Fouls regularly when iso'd in the post. Runs out of steam quickly (stamina issue on going, hasn't been fixed over 4 years).
You're suggesting that's far apart or close together? Capela isn't a great defender. He is a great shot blocker. There's a deference.
“Coach Daniel” has a really nice basketball channel on YouTube. Skip to 3:53 for his thoughts on Capela’s defense. Just one knowledgeable guy’s opinion, and it’s mixed, but overall positive. And I’d say Capela is improved this year versus last. And this doesn’t at all mention Capela’s defensive rebounding, which is elite.
