But having three different versions to choose from makes it that much easier to bolster specious arguments. Not pointing fingers, of course, but if the anti-Capela shoe fits...
Let me say it one last time, then you can help me spread the word... You are using NBA.com calculations for ORtg and DRtg . Holic is very likely using BAsketball-reference or nbawowy, who use a significantly different formula for calculating possessions. Here are BBref's numbers that are MUCH different...see the Rockets at 107.4 and league average over 108. https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2018.html This doesn't effect rankings for the most part, as all team numbers change in a relative manner. Now please help the cause and pass the info on to the next person you see who doesn't realize NBA and BBref are about 3pts off on their team ratings. See again @durvasa , it took two posts to fully explain to Reeko that both his numbers and BBholics numbers are relatively the same, yet different. Sigh I know you jest, but just to clarify, although the numbers across the sites are different, the team rankings are relatively the same. The formulas can be different without causing a change in rankings.
I use basketball reference, because I understand how they calculate their numbers and I know where to find what. You can’t draw any conclusions about a team by looking only at their numbers anyway. You have to look at them in relation to what other teams are doing. Might as well express efficiency ratings in a standardized manner — like how many standard deviations away from the league average the team is at. That way, you can even compare teams across different seasons.
anyways, this not so cleverly disguised Capela makes us worse defensively thread is weak Could u tell us how we do defending the PnR, protecting the rim, how well we rebound, how many points we give up in the paint, etc with Capela on or off the floor too?
actually, analysts in the know agree that nbawowy's numbers are the correct ones, as they are actually counting real possessions from PnP, and not estimating them from boxscores, which NBA.com and BBRef do. But that's besides the point. Point is: Now you do understand the numbers from each site are the same...they are just offset somewhat, but equally for all teams, leaving team ranking pretty much in agreement. So, before arguing about significantly different ORtg and DRtg, take a moment to consider the other person is using a different source, and therefore, for the most part, you actually agree. And, lastly, pass on this knowledge of varying calculations of ORtg and DRtg onto others/
Those are anomalies. Leonard was significantly injured. He's consistently made a defensive difference when healthy. The other seasons show it. Same with DJ. His team is decimated and they lost Paul. He's consistently been a great defender. Can't compare either case to Capela. What you could make a case for is Capela playing alongside Anderson.for approximately 2/3 of his on-court time. And that's a significant negative. Then we can argue whether Anderson's offense is more important to our success then his bad defense. And there would be some legitimacy there. For the record, in Capela's four seasons he's never been a plus defender unless he was playing alongside another great defender at the 4/5.
Don't have to cherry pick here. Four seasons of data show that unless Capela has a great defender beside him at the other power spot he is a non-difference maker defensively. I'm not saying he's a horrible defender. He used to be horrible. Now he's mediocre. But he's not a plus on the defensive end, even after improving his defensive rebounding substantially this season.
When you analyze Capela's defensive affect, it's blah. We're getting the same defensive performance out of the team when he sits. Now offensively, he's the best pick-and-roll big we've got. Simply because of his physical gifts and working on timing with Harden so much which translates to Paul. The opponent has to account for him more than the other guys going to the rim. 2 points per 100 offensive possessions better with him on court than off. But I'm not so sure that's not even mostly a function of the offense and who is around him offensively.
How much of that same defensive performance when he sits is against bench units tho? How much are u taking that into account?
Its four seasons of the same thing. If Capela is not running with a plus defender at the other power spot he has a zero to negative effect on our defense.
So you’re implying that the we could have Nene or Black out there with the starters and there would be no difference defensively or we might actually improve? I disagree. Capela has Ryno who is especially weak as a defender, rebounder, and paint presence as his partner in the front court. He also plays a lot with Harden. How often do Black and Nene share the floor with those 2 against starting units to impact their on court defensive ratings?
