On a related note, is it common not to turn off one's vehicle while filling gas? I've met several people recently who tell me they don't shut off their engine while at the petrol station.

This only applies to really rural areas, which are all on the east side of the state and look like Nevada. Ever heard of Juntura, Jordan Valley, Arock, or Voltage? Yeah, there's a reason for that. Portlandia, Eugene, Corvallis, Bend, and the whole west side of the Cascades are all safe from this shocking new thing.

(When I moved to OR, it was strange, but you get used to it and most of the gas people give my dog a biscuit, so that's cool.)

I dated a girl that did this 100% of the time. She swore it was safe. I find myself doing it sometimes and im still alive, so idk. I still typically shut it off.

Family and I have done this when we travel to visit family in Mexico. We keep the car on to keep the person honest. Still trying to figure out how they do it honestly. Basically whats happened to us on several occasions is that they'll fill our gas tank and about 10 minutes later of traveling our tanks drop like a rock to a quarter tank. Only way to prevent this was by keeping the car running. All gas stations, from what I've seen, in Mexico are full service. I just wouldn't do this with a vehicle that has gas cap or tank near the engine, like a mid engine car. Other risk, guess someone could drive off with your car while you're trying to pump your gas.

    Damn straight!

I grew up in Texas, lived in Nevada and spent the last two and half years in Portland. All I can say is...Oregon has it correct (at least the parts that still require an attendant to pump someone's gas for them).

I know how to pump my own gas...I've done it almost all of my life. When I moved here, I used to think that a man's right to pump his own gas was a Hank Hill-given privilege. But lo...watching someone else do this deed is as awesome as watching some landscaping crew beautify your suburban lawn and shrubbery. Now don't get me wrong...I'm not one of those PNW pansies that is practically crying because of this (Oregon has much bigger issues such as Sessions rescinding of the pot laws/rules). I do thoroughly enjoy not having to do this...and, I will not freak out when I travel to the wastelands to the east of the Cascades and be required to pump my own gas.

I spend a lot of time living in Chicago and I never turn my car off when I fill up. I had one idiot at a gas station flip out but that is it.

Wait, I live in Canada. Are you telling me that in Oregon/NJ you are NOT allowed by the law to put gas in your car by yourself at the gas station?

On the list of **** that annoyed me about New Jersey...the pumping of gas was way, WAY, WAY down the line.

I grew up in Jersey and did most of my driving there because I don't own a car now and live in a city. Most people where I'm from know how to pump your own gas (although there's always the occasional person who inexplicably has never left the state or something) that said it is SUPER nice especially in the winter to not have to get out of the car.

Lol. I have been to countries were people did this for you. But in the Nederlands you do it yourself.

I am laughing at people saying they di not know how to do it.. I could teach it to my five year old in like 5 minutes

Are you obligated to give a tip to the attendant? Do you give them the credit card or do you still get out of the car to swipe your card at the pump?

No obligation to tip. You can give your card for the attendant to swipe or you can get out and do it yourself. They are even required to pump gas for containers also. I believe Oregon passed this law in the past during a bad economic downturn and were trying everything it could to get jobs for people. It's truly a silly law but I enjoy it.
