No no sorry, I’m not saying Watson is fools gold, I’m saying fools gold with options happens often. I felt like Watson’s succes was largely him making stuff happen and hat concerns me. I want him in a system that works. Nothing from Obrien has ever made me believe he is creative on offense and that worries me. I don’t want Watson have a handful of great games to be the only thing that saves O’Brien’s job. That can easily be fools gold.
And yet you saw sets they’d never run before in the previous 4 years... a lot of pre-snap motion, fake-reverse, fully spread-out receivers with no shortage of the deep ball... that in all ways reflected how prolific the offense was getting. Saying that Watson was 100% responsible for those changes in the system, and that BOB had nothing to do with that, is as one-sided/biased a view that isn’t conducive to much discussion. If the Texans truly believe that all this offense was simply due to Watson, then by all means get rid of the entire coaching staff... hell, let Watson call all the plays and start a new trend.
They were running a bunch of read option and Watson scrambling. They were running stuff from college. The Texans oline isn't good enough, and Watson isn't Manning or Brady in making quick passes. A lot of it was Watson buying time and making plays. Hence none of the other QBs had any success.
Pagano had great runs of games with Luck. Sooner or later though all the other issues with a coach outweigh the fact that a special quarterback can make special plays. If they give OBrien another contract, OK, but you can't keep him and Rick Smith.
Pagano isn’t in charge of the offense. Yes, when Luck goes down, Pagano doesn’t seem like that great of a coach. I’m not under the impression that any coach out there, with the exception of Belichick, can do much without talent. Rick Smith should have been gone after 2010 (when he was just a cap manager), and again after 2013 (when he decided to admit that he was just a cap manager, and all the major decisions were done by the coaches... except JJ Watt and any other good ones he wanted to claim).
Yes, there was a component of that. It wasn’t the majority of the offense. Especially in the games where they were rolling (where defenses gave up on bringing extra pressure as they were getting burned).
Exactly. Right now the only thing you can point to is what Watson did and if you look at anything else BOB did while head coach you just see incompetence. I find it hard to believe that a coach that has shown nothing but incompetence his entire career is the primary reason why Watson did so well. Also, it's just so odd that while apparently Watson looking elite is enough to keep BOB, but not enough to keep the GM that took the risk trading up to draft him. To me those who just REALLY want Rick Smith fired are people who have been saying that for years and would say so no matter what happened. I'm not aware of any GM getting fired the season after drafting a potentially elite franchise QB because in just about any situation, that one success is worth at least one more year.
Because its abundantly clear that Smith and BOB aren’t working well together, and that’s a disaster of any kind for a football team. Also, Smith isn’t absolved of the Osweiler decision by getting Watson. They’re still recovering from that in terms of lost picks and cap space. Jimmy Garapolo looks to have taken off outside the New England environment (where plenty of hot take experts here said that wouldn’t happen)... and Watson obviously took off as well. If the front office was as good at evaluating QB’s as some say they are now.... why waste a year and money on Osweiler when it was clear that these two guys would be available the very next year?
Jay Glazer: Coaching Fate - OUT Marvin Lewis - meeting tomorrow morning with the owner; still wants to coach Bruce Arians - will announce whatever he's doing by tomorrow morning Chuck Pagano - out Jim Caldwell - out; got fake extension John Fox - out + Giants already open job Coaching Fate - THINK THEY'RE SAFE Hue Jackson Jay Gruden Dirk Koetter - Once Gruden told them he's not interested, they panicked & said we'll sit here with Dirk Koetter. Coaching Fate - TIME WILL TELL Jack Del Rio - Gruden rumors are real, they are pursuing. Mike Mularkey - On the hot seat; not happy with QB development Pete Carroll - Pete's decision to move on or not; may retire. Bill O'Brien - that place is so dysfunctional, you cannot go another year with O'Brien & their GM Rick Smith coming back in the same capacity; there will be quite the battle tomorrow that goes on with Bill O'Brien & ownership Vance Joseph - On the hot seat 1 or 2 surprises; I don't know what they'll be. Maybe Ron Rivera? POSSIBLE COACHING REPLACEMENTS Pat Shurmur - Vikings OC Mike Vrabel & Bill O'Brien - They'll both be very hot if they're out there. Steve Wilks - Panthers DC Previous HCs - Jim Schwartz, Dennis Allen, Josh McDaniels If you want your next "Sean McVay", Matt Nagy(Chiefs OC) Old Veterans in Dave Toub & Joe DeCamillis
Because he's incompetent at coaching football, because the players he had brought in were terrible....and he's such a simpleton that he created toxic situations with some of those guys, because I'm likely to have to deal with more of his incompetence in the years to come. Keeping BOB is one of the best ways to limit Watson's ceiling.
Sounds good but I would think you would need to get Rick Smith completely out of the building to make sure he isn't stirring up trouble.
I have always thought Rick is just a cap manager and should be fired. But if that's the case why does he get blamed for the roster?
He needs to be away from day to day football operations. He can still oversee the business side of things. Hell, he can go back to being the cap manager.
He was, until he consolidated more power for himself after the Kubiak firing. And I see plenty here giving him credit for the good parts of the roster. Seems like he doesn’t get much blame for the bad decisions. That’s some fan idiocy at its best.
All of the worst players in the league cheer at the prospects of BOB getting more player control, it'll mean they'll have a home on the Texans. Before long it'll be nothing but Hoyer and Mallett quality players on the Texans.
