So ... that goes for Osweiler too, right? Mahomes senses heightened interest from Texans' O'Brien Bill O'Brien Reportedly 'Absolutely Loves' Patrick Mahomes He was Mallett & Hoyer's coach in New England. Hard not to connect the dots. And well, said the City of Houston should be proud of Hoyer & Mallett. "These guys can play." (Let me guess, Rick Smith made him say that and/or that was just PR press conference fluff, he didn't really mean it because I mean, what else is he gonna say? They suck?)
Texans are likely to keep BOB. http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...turning-houston-texans-head-coach-next-season If this is the case, they must fire Rick Smith. Don't be the Colts and bring both guys back, guaranteeing future dysfunction (if it's as bad as believed). Extend him and get a new GM. Turn the page.
The good news when it comes to giving BOB another season is that we'll get to see more of Lamar Miller treated as a between the tackles power back. That's always good for a laugh.
Personally, I don’t mind rolling through QBs if there is no franchise QB. I’d much rather have a coach with that mentality rather than an overly stubborn one. Seems like it doesn’t matter anyway because Watson looks like the real deal. I haven’t liked O’Brien’s playcalling in pressure situations, but his scheme put up a ton of points with Watson and his abilities. If Watson wants O’Brien as his coach, then I’d keep him too.
I would argue that anyone could coach Watson when he's performing at that level and anyone competent wouldn't get in Watson's way like BOB did....you remember, when BOB caused 2 losses with his play calling and game mismanagement despite amazing play by Watson. As always, I'll do my best to hold out hope that if BOB comes back next year he'll have magically learned how to be a competent coach....but if that doesn't happen, he'll still be essentially worthless.
I remember those two mishaps. O’Brien believes in the philosophy that I hate so much. And that’s to alter successful playcalling in order to milk clock. It becomes so basic and predictable. Hopefully his aggressiveness in change will apply to his philosophy. If it doesn’t, then hopefully the defense will improve enough to protect a top-3 scoring offense, which the Texans had with Watson. No one knows if another coach can have the same success with Brady. Same with Watson. We do know Watson and O’Brien work. And we know Watson wants O’Brien. Here’s to hoping we just blow teams out and not have to worry about O’Brien calling Miller’s number in power-I for 1 yard when Watson is the QB.
Don’t think anybody here is the staunchest of BOB supporters... but anybody who doesn’t think he deserves the slightest chance, given what Watson did with him, given that Watson has gone on record wanting him, given that this offense wasn’t just good with a rookie QB... it was record setting, and given that the only thing that matters for this franchise for next year (and beyond) is Watson’s development... is likely not going to change their minds, regardless of what they do next year. There also continues to be a ton of hypocrisy in some of these hot takes here: 1. BOB had a lot to do with getting Osweiler, but not much to do with wanting Watson. 2. BOB should have started Watson over Savage from day one (even though the same posters were totally supporting the decision at the time). 3. Offense/schemes were all due to a rookie QB who’d never played at this level before, not BOB. 4. BOB should have known that Watson was this ready, this fast, when NOBODY was clamoring for him at this level after pre-season.... and he still ends up putting him in the very first game, which drew the ire of plenty of people during that game thread (“What is he doing? Watson isn’t ready! Desperation!”). There’s enough risk/reward to given BOB just one more year to continue the Watson development track... and earn his way towards an extension (as opposed to Rick Smith being gifted an extension every 5 years, regardless of team results). If he fails, you bring on a new football guy to head the next HC process (while Rick has been elevated to yet another position), again with the happiness and education of Watson being the ultimate priority. Honestly, the Texans will never realize how fortunate they were to get out of the Osweiler debacle and fall into Watson, after all teams inexplicably passed.
Watson played great by being a crazy magician out there that made miracles happen when plays broke down. Does anyone remember watching thinking “man gang that was a great playcall!” All I remember is him seeing his line fold and evading pressure and getting great plays off in scramble drills
Sure... most people do remember that. To say that he did that every single play when the offense was putting up 30+ points is entirely wrong though. In fact, their best offensive game (the Tennessee game) featured an abundance of throws within the scheme... and they put up 50+ points. Absolutely nobody should be saying that BOB made Watson into what he is.... at the same time, nobody can say that Watson was entirely responsible for every good thing on offense. In the end, both sides showed adaptability as the weeks went on... which for one, makes me excited to see what else they’re capable of with more time. We can say, with all certainty, that the line sucks. It has to get better. Use the entire draft and free agency to make it better. Watson shouldn’t have to be running for his life and doing the spectacular, even though he can, if the line does its job.
Fair. I just don’t get the love fest for him right now. I think his players love him and play hard for him I have always given him that. His offensive scheme though has never impressed me and a small sample size of greatness from an option quarterback has so often been fools gold in this league that I’m highly skeptical. If nothing else he absolutely needs an offensive coordinator with a different viewpoint. The fact that he basically admitted to forgetting he had donta foreman on the roster was damning.
Is it really a love fest? I have no doubt that if BOB is back, its solely because of what he did with Watson, and nothing else. For a franchise that had NEVER seen that sort of offensive production, let alone a QB-starved franchise watching a true rookie do what he did... I mean, if you can’t get over-the-top excited at the possibilities there, when can you get excited? Also, calling him just a fools-gold option QB speaks volumes as to how skewed your memory may be of him. Go back and watch these games... especially the Tennessee and Seattle games (his last game). Compare how he looked there to the awful Cincy game. Nobody wants to simply have him out there scrambling for his life and making magic happen. THAT is not sustainable. But a better o-line combined with him continuing to improve his quick decision making (he still had at least one WTF throw almost every game) is something that I’ll certainly look forward to, regardless of who ends up coaching this team or running the offense.
