By now, you should know what you get with BoB so it should come as no surprise to you next year when the Texans find themselves (once again) stuck in mediocrity. And that's assuming that Watson can come back and pick up where he left off.
The parallels between Kubiak’s initial mediocre run (prior to some success) and BOB’s is there. Kubiak should have never survived 2010, but did. BOB may survive due to Watson’s preference, but not for much else.
"The players like him" is pretty much the last line of argument you hear before a coach finally gets deservedly fired.
Because he has demonstrated beyond any doubt his incompetence as both a strategist and a game manager. Plus if he has any say in personnel, then god help him there too because that has been downright awful. The verdict is in, folks. BOB sucks. He does not deserve the opportunity to ruin Watson's career or to let Watson save his.
with how good the offense looked with watson, combined with no o-line, I want to see what he can do with a full season with watson and some resemblance of an offensive line. its as simple as that to me.
Kubiak had Matt Schaub for the majority of his time here. His offense also “paralleled” him having a decent QB.
The pre 2011 teams were often underprepared, underachieving, or just plain mediocre. There is a precedent for this owner.
Exactly. One year of Carr and Kubiak knew he had to move on. Schaub had been rumored to be on the trade market for a couple years. Kubiak not only talked to him but went golfing with him. He was very careful because he knew how valuable draft picks are. We traded two second rounders for Schaub and also swapped firsts one year (dropping 2 spots). It was a big price but we got several years of pro bowl caliber play. Compare that to the signing of Osweiler (where O'Brien never even talked to him) or how he dealt with Mallet and Hoyer.
But he also started with a much worse roster. It takes time to build it up. Really it was expansion level. O'Brien came to a solid group of talent he tore down over 4 years.
BOB didn't tear it down. He simply wasted it. If BOB could have put together a halfway competent offense in his entire 4 years here we would have won 11+ games a year.
True, the defense was good until this year. But he let the OL and secondary fall apart. There is also very little depth on this roster
Despite all that, Kubiak still inexplicably survived 2010. Some here even felt he should have inexplicably survived the disastrous 2013. If you felt those moves were ok, and don’t see how BOB may still be here after this season, it’s hypocrisy at its finest.
Yeah I think he can survive. But I think the defense has been good (until this year) and would be ok with keeping Crennel and Vrabel. After 2010 the offense was good so they went after Wade Philips
He wasn't. Don't take away from how amazing the progress he made in a very short time by ignoring how bad he looked in preseason. Things went back to awful because that's the natural state of a Bill O'Brien coached offense. I honestly don't know why people keep making excuses for him, he proves every single week that he's not competent to run an offense in the NFL. I mean, how long has he been with the same players and he STILL doesn't seem to realize that Lamar Miller isn't a between the tackles power back...and that he should call more screens for him. How many times does he have to demonstrate terrible late game clock management? How many games does his play calling have to sabotage before fans realize that the guy is terrible? I mean, fans will beat up on Rick Smith.....but the ONLY time BOB has appeared even halfway competent is due to Rick Smith getting him a franchise QB instead of the scrubs BOB would suggest.
So, injury can be a scapegoat for the defense... but not for the offense? Were you not impressed with what the offense was doing with Watson and a terrible O-line? If they do end up bringing a head coach, I'd prefer for a total overall on both sides of the ball. Vrabel still has a ways to go as a coordinator.
I'm starting to sound like a broken record but for some reason this won't sink in... terrible offenses aren't going to be very good. Unless you have some offensive mastermind, a bad offensive line combined with an incompetent quarterback combined with terrible skill players outside of one receiver is gonna be a bottom dweller offense, regardless of who is coaching. Again - with a good quarterback, likely the worst offensive line in football, and a terrible set of skill position players outside of Hopkins, we had the highest scoring offense in football. That is a bit better than "halfway competent". I don't think O'Brien is amazing, but expecting him to coach our horrible offenses to greatness is basically expecting us to get the next Bill Walsh or Bellicheck. If we're assigning blame, Rick Smith needed to go far before we evaluate whether O'Brien deserves another year to prove himself.
There are other arguments for keeping him, but I can see you have already made up your mind. I am not convinced he should be fired. I wish McNair would make up his mind and get this speculation over with.
