I think his personality has something to do with it. He yells, he throws f bombs, he sounds like a football coach from the movies.
Naw, he's already been fired by Rick. This year, next year... he's gone. If I were him I'd "mutually" get my azz away from this organization right now. But the team still controls his contract and Rick wants to control where he goes, he doesn't want him in the AFC South if he can block it. That decision was made in 2015. O'Brien wanted to bring in a capable front office guy to work alongside Rick who could actually make informed scouting decisions and better operate the draft -- he offered three names to McNairs. McNairs declined and extended Rick's contract to 2020 instead. Two of those three are GMs with other teams now. And in the meantime Brian Gaine left the Texans to take a lower position with a lesser organization -- in Buffalo. And Rick hired Jimmy Raye, III to replace Gaine. Raye worked with Ryan Grigson for the Colts 2013-16. You should have heard what Sean Jones (Super Bowl champ/2x All Pro/2x Pro Bowl) had to say about that, LOL -- he pulled no punches. Knowledge.
You know, I wouldn't actually be surprised if you were BOB given how ridiculous you are when it comes to defending him. Also, I'd LOVE if he went to another team in the AFC South...ya know why? No other team in the AFC South has a Watson caliber QB, so BOB being their head coach insures their offense will get worse every single season. Sign me up for that. And it's a damn good thing they ignored BOB and stuck with a GM that would ignore BOB's awful QB suggestions and instead trade up for Watson. Think of how bad things could be if they had switched to a GM that was as bad at QB evaluation as BOB is....we'd have many more years of Hoyer and Mallett caliber QB's. LOL you are quoting Sean Jones now? That's embarrassing. Out of everyone on the radio, he's got the hottest hot takes that almost never have any basis in reality, he might as well be Skip Bayless.....but that might be an insult to Skip.
Should I name the offensive personell to accompany each season? If you gave me the list of players on offense without telling me the coach I wouldn't expect them to finish any higher. I personally thought Bob did a great job scheming an offense around Deshaun. Say "that's so obvious anyone could do it, blah blah blah" but we arguably had the best offense in the league during Watson's stretch. I loved all the play-fakes, mis-directions, fake jet sweeps, etc. Defenses were really bamboozled trying to stop our offense, having to account for Deshaun's dual-ability.
Would it matter? You had QB's hand picked by BOB during at least 2 of those seasons and you got nothing out of it. Also, the point is that it took Watson playing at an elite level to make BOB look competent.....and even then his poor decisions led to 2 games being lost that should have been won. Even when you stack the deck for BOB, he still manages to screw it up. Also, you look at what a competent coach that actually wanted him managed to do with Keenum and you just shake your head at the level of incompetence that some are trying to sell as excellence.
Does the personnell matter when assigning blame for offensive production matter? Uh, yeah, obviously. Yeah the QB's were "hand-picked", out of the toilet. Considering the other options, solid play from Fitzpatrick/Hoyer was maybe even above expected. Also, word on the street is Rick Smith is the one that wanted Osweiler, not O'Brien. Yes, he messed up the end of both the New England and Seattle games, but he also had the highest scoring offense in the league when Watson was healthy. Mistakes like that you can learn from, and aren't firable until they become a chronic, never-ending problem. My biggest gripe with firing coaches is people want change for the sake of change without acknowledging nothing good may come from it. Who would you suggest replaces O'Brien?
When you get the guys you asked for, and you pass on a QB already on the roster that a legitimately good coach turned into the guy leading their team to a first round bye in the playoffs with a top 10 QB rating....you don't get that excuse. When it comes to Osweiler, I'm willing to pin that on Smith, but what is BOB's excuse for Hoyer and Mallett? Those were CLEARLY his picks. So far, Watson (a Smith guy) is the ONLY thing in BOB's career that has been able to make him look halfway competent at running an offense....and that's allegedly the ONLY thing he brings to the table. When it comes to replacing him, given that he brings essentially nothing to the table, just find someone who legitimately is a competent offensive coach and you are starting out ahead.
Only one year was the Texans offense actually bad, other years it was slightly below average but near middle of the pack. Not bad for Hoyer/Fitzy led offenses, don't know of many competent coaches that could turn these offenses into elite scoring machines. Also you act like this late-career Keenum revival was expected, when that couldn't be the farther from the truth. Sometimes a guy will click with a coach that has the right scheme and right fit. Keenum's doing great and I'm happy for him, but honestly his stats don't blow Hoyer's Texans stint out of the water. And he was garbage last season. Keenum 2017: 21 TD's, 7 INT's, 98.1 Rating, 239 YPG Hoyer 2015: 19 TD's, 7 INT's, 91.4 Rating, 237 YPG Point is Hoyer played about as well as one could reasonably expect him to play (sans playoff game) and nobody has ever taken Keenum seriously as a starter until now (he is 29). You can get riled up on B.O.B. for "passing" up on the elite Case Keenum, but he hasn't been that much better than Hoyer was.
The point was that every year it got worse....the offensive guru did nothing but make things worse till Watson came along and played like an elite QB for a few months.....then things went back to completely awful. LOL when you are playing up Hoyer's 2015, check the teams that he did that against. He ran up stats against the worst defenses in the NFL and got his teeth kicked in against even halfway decent defenses. There honestly is no comparison between the two, Keenum is playing VERY well this season and Hoyer was always a dumpster fire even if he managed to look good against dumpster fires like the Colts, Jags, Titans, and Saints.
remember when you said start Savage, Watson isnt ready... Who are you to judge? And before you say "Well I'm not the coach I shouldnt have to be held accountable for my opinion" Then stop giving it so much.
Need to fix the secondary/pass protection. Allow O'brien and Watson to have a season together. If you can do those things they will win the AFC South and have as good a chance as anyone to win the AFC.
Things went back to awful because we have the worst offensive line in football, injury riddled skill-positions (which are pretty bad outside of Hopkins), and Tom Savage, perhaps the worst candidate to put behind a shaky offensive line. If B.O.B. turned that into a respectable offense, he'd deserve to be in Canton. As to Hoyer's 2015 stats, he made 11 starts against NFL teams. I haven't delved into his opponents, but I don't think I've ever heard "strength of schedule" used when evaluating nearly a full season of QB stats. This isn't college football.
I get BOB's shortcomings, but why not give him a full season with Watson? If it's somehow a disaster dumpster fire, then sure, fire him. But until we can see what he can do with a competent QB we don't really know much about his full offensive potential.
Reading this actually really surprised me, but it seems things like these tend to off of NFL climate, things they hear from sources/front offices, etc. When you think about it, the head-coach market is pretty horrible right now.
