That's what I mean. I don't understand how the media puts him even close. They proved last year that team record isn't used as a criteria. Or was that just bullshit b/c of this triple-double chase? This is what I mean- they truly ****ed up last year. It was the first time in the history of the NBA MVP race that they gave the MVP to a person on a team that wasn't even close to having the best record. They've always given it to the player on either the 1st or 2nd best team. They are full of ****, ultimately.

MVPs follow narrative (deserved or not), not the other way around. Nash's success at the helm of the Phoenix Suns offense, going from 29 wins to 62 wins in his first season with the team, led to the recognition which led to the MVP. It's not that he was arbitrarily chosen to be an MVP winner and that's what led to people to recognizing him as one of the game's great offensive players.

MVP voting is, by nature, subjective because there's no clear-cut set of rules. If you want a rigid, perfectly consistent algorithm for selecting MVP, then get rid of voting and just let a computer decide who the MVP is. When you have an inherently subjective process, narrative will play a big role.

Harden's narrative this season is (potentially) leading the Rockets to one of the most unique and potent offenses in league history, successfully meshing his skills with Chris Paul, and (hopefully) leading the Rockets to be seen as the primary competition to the Warriors as opposed to the OKC Thunder. Having a clearly superior campaign compared to last season's MVP to whom he was a close runner up will also help. He has a "'make up vote" angle going for him.

But LeBron looks like he'll have a competing narrative that is also compelling, especially if he can get his team to the 1st seed, and comparably awesome stats of his own, so we'll see how it goes with the voters. At this stage of the season, it's way too early to decide that any player is a "clear front-runner".

Me personally? My opinion would be exactly the same, which is to say that James Harden is the best offensive basketball player in today’s NBA, Period.

MVP’s or none, I believe he just is.

Media? I believe if he was a 2 time MVP, we’d still have lost KD to GSW because of 2 straight finals, still gotten CP3 because we did anyway, still lost Melo cus DM values (DM the best GM), and we would be the same darlings we are, just, with a few less haters.

I think he's smart to keep his mouth shut. I'd be dismissive if ever asked about it if I were him.
