VTC has a halving in 12/12, (It's already started pumping, so take into consideration). That's my most recent position. My investment advice should always be taken with a grain of salt though.

FYI, as a followup to the earlier tax discussion, there are services that will let you import all your trades and produce your tax information for you. I haven't used these, but these are apparently 2 popular ones:

    https://bitcoin.tax/
    https://cointracking.info/

I think someone posted that a while back, and when I looked around, it was the most popular. Pretty cheap, too. Hopefully I don’t have a ton of trades to worry about (like during the insanity that was “the DotCom bubble”)

Read something on Reddit about some Tether scam...the guy thinks BTC will tank to 5k...not sure what that even means, but any thoughts?

Link? The Tether thing has been known for a while to my knowledge and will have little influence.

BTW be careful which subreddit you visit, r/bitcoin is the real one while r/btc is run by the BCash guy and aims to destroy bitcoin, you'll only see very misleading content there.

I dont have the link, I was looking at it earlier on the app on my phone. I was in the litecoin subreddit. Wasnt sure if it was a jackass trying to freak people out or if it was something to consider.

Found the comment you mentioned, it has little foundation. I also checked the guys' posting history and it's often sketchy one-liners that are downvoted.

Even if the tether thing fully comes out in force, 5k is very unreasonable and not based on any analysis.
The tether/scam rumors have been around for quite a while now, a new development wouldn't come out of nowhere and shock the market.
Saying BTC will lose half its value because of one shady business isn't reasonable.

Is Binance based overseas? I don’t want to wake up one morning and find out my money is gone because “the government said so”. Lol. Although I’ve been reading a lot of overseas Bittrex accounts have apparently had that happen and Bittrex is in the US.

    ****, this exploded.

Not good to hear that about Bittrex @Dr of Dunk

I literally made an account last week and xfer some BTC into Nano. Haven't been keeping too many tabs in this, but is there another coinbase-like platform where I can just straight up invest into any alt/cc without having to transfer?

british. Never keep your crypto in any exchange. You don;t really own it if its in an exchange. The exchanges that are usually having legal issues exchange crypto for dollars and vice versa. Binance is just crypto to crypto.

Binance is Hong Kong based, to my knowledge.
In general, you won't really find any private exchange that didn't commit any blunder in the past or is 100% safe. If you're solely doing Bitcoin, ETH and LTC, GDAX might be your best bet.

Isn't Coinbase the only exchange that is insured against theft? Maybe I'm making that up..

Extremely sure it is Hong Kong based, where did you read about GB?
Edit: Looked up and seems I'm right.

ledger or trezor are highly thought of

the upside is that you become the custodian of your coins and no one can take them from you

the downside is that you become the custodian of your coins and can lose them :)
