FWIW, it was the GOP that gave that $250 deduction and it was originally temporary. The funding of classrooms is the big problem. Spending is also an issue as it always is.

Its not really about the deduction as much as it is symbolic of the GOP's assault on public education. This is really a modern GOP problem, and more of a state issue than it is federal even though Trump and Devos are trying their hardest to make it federal.

Even recently with GWB, there was an emphasis on public education at the federal level. No Child Left Behind had lots of issues that I believe just were not well thought out, but at least the thought was there. Still alot of grant money came out of it that went to low income areas to help raise education standards.

The real issues started when the GOP went full blown privatizing everything in 2009 and beyond where you saw the assault beginning. And nobody wants to privatize social security next more than our good ole Texas senators. Our Texas leadership since then has been the worst at this in our state. Its why nearly every damn road in Texas will eventually be a privately owned toll road. Your kid wont get an education but hey at least they will have a job delivering packages for Amazon or whatever company moves in to take advantage of lower taxes & low wages. Its catch 22 of course, but we need to draw the line somewhere, and I believe education is crossing the line big time.

The idea that Texas education sucks is a misnomer. The fact is, minorities and low-income simply do worse nationwide for a lot of different reasons, and Texas has a lot of people in those categories. But when adjusted for demographics, Texas is actually 2nd by some key measures, behind only Massachusetts:

Texas also leads or is 2nd in the nation in HS graduation rates for basically each racial group:

No worries there, Roc Paint. I don't think anyone was offering you any money to attempt to teach kids.

I'm in cali and kinda pleasantly surprised there's a couple states worse then we are. California democrats are always trying to do anything they can to screw over teachers, whether it's take away tenure, take away public funding, etc.

    Blah blah blah.

The idea that democrats treat teachers as poorly as republicans is hilarious.

As for me, I don't have a lot of sympathy for teachers in general. Prospective teachers know the benefits, salary structure and the general complaints within the teaching profession.

If you tax private planes less than the owners will fly more. Than there will be more jobs fueling and cleaning the planes.

How dare you want to deprive these folks their jobs.

Whether you respect teachers or not is irrelevant, but i assume you don't like in cali or have any clue what happens here, so your statement is just ignorant and idiotic

Mr. trump's contempt for public education, based on personal experience, of course (not!), is obvious. It became crystal clear when he appointed DeVos as Secretary of Education, a rich ignoramus who hasn't got a clue about education or much else, in my humble opinion. Her performance before a Republican chaired Senate Subcommittee defending a cut in trump's 2018 budget for the Department of Education of more than 13% earned her bipartisan criticism.

I think that Nook is off base with his own apparent contempt for teachers. There are several teachers and retired teachers, as well as university faculty, in my family, so I know something about the subject. Regardless of your own experience in California, however, Nook is correct that Democrats are far more supportive of public education than Republicans are. Had Clinton, instead of trump, been elected last year, there would have been a Secretary of Education fighting before those senators for more funding, not less, and the pittance of a deduction that trump has taken away from teachers would certainly remain, and quite possibly increased, in my opinion.

FWIW, that GOP is dead and gone.

So they should just accept it as fait accompli? They shouldn't fight for better working conditions and protections? Part of knowing what they get included that minuscule deduction.

Did you even read what you quoted? There's been legislation to take away tenure, to take away public funding to give to private schools

I agree about DeVos, hate her and her ideas, same with Trump and his ideas. However, that position just seems to go to the presidents buddy even if they have no experience and no clue, look at Arne Duncan who was a complete and utter moron with zero clue (zero being very generous) about public education.

Also, not sure why you brought up Nook, who cares what that idiot thinks?

You obviously do. I responded to comments you both made. Does that make me an idiot? Maybe so.

Has any of that legislation passed? And do you think lifetime tenure for a teacher after two years is good education policy?

I do not live in California. You know how I know you are not a teacher?
