The cheap AfD sh** regarding refugees unleashing chaos and dragging the country into a civil war here hasn't happened and a lot of voters have begun to realize they won't be affected at a larger scale, which is why AfD lost about half their voters compared to two years ago. It's funny how you are sitting in the USA and try to tell me how dangerous Germany is, when the USA is off far worse. Could reverse your statements and ask why you think voting for Trump was a good idea, when the country was already divided and racial tensions were at a peak after the BLM movement. Or maybe you had a masterplan in mind, with Trump being such a comically bad president that all races and colors would soon be united against him.

Back to Germany: AfD leader Frauke Petry saying she'll leave the party, as she wants a more conservative and realistic approach and sees how a lot of conservative AfD personal is disappointed with the new leadership. Mentioned how the party is lead by radical voices and in disarray atm, which makes her goal of doing conservative and real politics impossible. This is a huge blow to AfD, as Petry was by far their most iconic, intelligent and charismatic politician. She was also the only conservative (at least compared to the rest of AfD) voice left, a lot of people voted for AfD because of her and I think this will destroy the party long-term. I'm pretty sure she'll found a new party soon, which should be an interesting development for German politics. This should play right into the hands of our major parties though, as voters will now be split into the AfD-Petry camp and make it extremely unlikely for AfD to repeat this year's success. Edit: Her husband, NRW's (Germany's largest state) AfD leader, also stepping down. AfD is imploding quicker than expected.
Saw that coming. The last couple of weeks it was obvious that Petry is not as much on the nazi side as her mates. Still, leaving the party one day after the election and still taking that mandate is cheating on voters and the party. So eventhough I appreciate this scum to collapse, which was just a matter of time, she is still not better than them. I hope we can get back to serious issues now and this pile of human garbage will disappear rather sooner than later.

Update here: The only possible coalition ("Jamaica") between CDU/CSU, FDP and Die Grüne seems to not come together. They've been talking for a month now without finding a broad agreement. One of the main issues is family unicifaction for approved refugees. The conservative CDU/CSU badly wants to prevent it, the leftist green party wants to enable it, the FDP is relucant because (as usual) of the costs. Today appears to be the deadline to find a consensus. If they don't, a reelection is inevitable. Nobody wants that, especially Merkel, but I feel like they will cancel the negotiations soon.
Not the FDP's fault, in my opinion. The Greens were acting like they won the election. They wanted this to fail.

By the way the respective representatives appeared the last days and weeks, my guess is it was CSU's fault. Backwardness, ignorance and internal power struggle are no good combination to find a consensus. Hope they crush next year in the Bavaria votings.
So after nearly six months we finally got a new government. Merkel has been inaugurated today on her fourth term as chancellor. I'm very sceptical about the new cabinet members, especially Seehofer (antiquated) and Maas (spineless) in key positions. This is the most accurate illustration of German politics I've seen in a while...
