I mean, can someone be fired for demonstrating on a hot button issue at a political protest rally if a picture of them doing it is posted online? That wouldn't be right either, IMO.
That is because you are completely clueless on what At-Will employment means. Im not surprised because you consistently believe the world should revolve around your standard of belief. I also suspect if her action went against what you believed was right (for example, if it was Obama's motorcade), her 'protected freedom of speech' would fall far behind the company's right to fire her. Its called hypocrisy. For those who are too dense to understand, she was not fired for flipping off the motorcade. She was fired because it went viral and they didnt want the nut jobs at their doorstep harassing them.
You know the answer. Freedom is fake, always has been and folks hiding behind FREEDOM is getting out of hand. This is what I tell my kids, play stupid games win stupid prizes. She played a stupid game imo, and she won a stupid prize.
With all due respect, based on this post, I feel a bit sorry for your kids. Freedom isn't "fake." Perhaps you should travel more, see more of the world. Experience countries that don't have the freedoms and constitutional protections Americans enjoy. Take your kids with you and explain the differences between those countries and our own. It could be educational for you and your kids, in my opinion.
Haha, I'm a consultant who has travelled all over and taken my family with me a few places. They know that even the places that are "free" are not and they know especially when travelling to not play stupid games. I love my kids like no other so I tell them the truth not some pretend fantasyland. You probably think black teenagers and their worried mothers have freedom too huh. Maybe raise a minority before you preach stupid ****.
Ok, so when a Google employee who is conservative criticizes diversity and at one point makes a potentially sexist remark, and gets fired for it - people on the right decried it as censorship and "PC Culture" taking over companies like Google. Now when this woman makes a political gesture outside the workplace, it's no longer about PC Culture or Censorship but about taking responsibility for ones actions? I am just trying to understand the right's position and why it is inconsistent. Not sure why that makes you so angry.

Unlucky? I would say illegal. She was exercising free speech away from the workplace and without mentioning that workplace. That she could be fired for that is outrageous.
no it's not, free speech does not apply to work places. This has been happening a lot since the social media age, this isn't anything special. People have been fired for twitter messages, facebook status. the video went viral, this bring negative attention to the employer, they don't need this headache. It's unlucky because if she wasn't caught on tape she'd still be working.
A pic taken and posted by the President's motorcade. That is probably the most disturbing part for me. The other issue is that they didn't apply the same rules to another employee. I understand why companies have social media policies, but when you enforce them unequally, you open yourself to a lawsuit.
That doesn't overly matter, as social media policies dictate that you are always a representative of your employer. My wife has one for the college she works for.
