The greatest played WS game ever? No. The most exciting WS game ever? Easily in the top-5. I still don't know what to say about that rollercoaster. Daammmn.
As fans, we're also used to announcers who are biased towards our team. When someone comes along and attempts to be neutral, we perceive their giving equal time to the opposition as them favoring the other team. I found the Buck/Yankee homer thing kind of funny because Yankee fans hate Buck too. Fans of both teams thought he was biased towards the other team. But at least Buck has consistently called Altuve the likely MVP.
He also commented on his height to the point where it was not hard to construe as derogatory. it seems like he is always setting up the other teams. What stat shows their good side, how will this situation play to their favor. John smoltz is the unbiased commentator in the booth. What really bothers me Is his voice. It’s so practiced. We grew up with milo and gene Peterson, gruff baritones with character. Artists. If they spoke to you in real life, they would sound exactly the same. Joey buck sounds like a polished weenie. Like black guys doing the white guy voice.
That's his job, he's just terrible at it, not letting the bias show through. I was really interested when Smoltz said he'd never held a baseball since he retired. How does he hold a pen? Or button a shirt? "It was worth it." -- John Smoltz Respect.
I couldn’t tell I fell he meant emotional or physical pain. Probably both. He’s about as good of a color guy as there is.
Physical. Something with his wrist/finger ligaments from throwing so many sliders and gripping so tight. That's all I can guess.
Not with this baseball team, no. Why would it?.... This team has proven, again and again and again, that it is up to the challenge. I have no concerns whatsoever because, 700 years ago, a team that no longer exists blew a 32-point lead in a playoff game.
Great point. Joe Buck grew up in St. Louis; his dad was an integral part of the Cardinals identity for decades. My guess.... if Buck has a favorite baseball team, it's probably them. I mean, look - the Yankees, Red Sox and/or Cubs are going to bring in the largest audience; I guarantee you, the majority of viewers watching the ALCS were Yankee fans - that's just the nature of the beast. Does he possibly cater to that?... Sure. Does he prefer the Yankees to the Astros in the World Series? Also likely as, again: for him (and his network), it's about ratings and the Yankees are the Dallas Cowboys of MLB. But go back and watch the end of game 7. He very sincerely - and excitedly - talked up the Astros-Dodgers match-up. He knows both teams are great.
Here's the other thing viewers need to remember: the audience for the World Series is not made-up of die-hard Astros fans, or even die-hard baseball fans. For millions of people, this is their first significant exposure to Jose Altuve. So, yes- those of us who have been Astros fans all these years have heard ALL these narratives before - but Joe Buck isn't aiming at us. He KNOWS we're watching. What he has to do is make this match-up compelling for the casual fan who doesn't watch baseball until October. That's you, running his commentary through your Astros-only filter: I guarantee you, Joe Buck is not ignoring the Astros' side of things. That's just patently absurd. Go back and watch any game where the results are known and you're not dying with every pitch... he's down the middle: that's very nearly the entirety of his assignment, for f's sake.
What? Smoltz is great at talking about mechanics of pitching and his experiences. However, too often he is the old guy waving his fist screaming get off my lawn concerning the way baseball is adapting to newer analytics and ideas. Granted, he actually mentions them begrudgingly which is more than most national color guys. That said, I'm not a big fan of most announcers and basically think that guy is annoying when someone says an announcer is good. Not everything is a narrative that has a bigger meaning. Sometimes a hit is just a hit. Luckily, I can tune out most of the commentary such that they basically sound like an adult talking to Charlie Brown.
Yep, I peeped some yankees forums during last series and they were arguing how joe buck is slobbing verlander every second. Peeped some dodgers forums and they are pissed about joe buck getting excited over us. Fans are fanatics and super biased. His job is to try to stay excited and keep the national audience engaged. Still though, as an astros fan screw joe buck lol
Seriously, the craziest emotional rollercoaster I've ever been on via being a fan of sports. So many lows and highs. My knees were literally shaking (bouncing up and down like crazy) in the 9th and into the 10th. I was a wreck. But my goodness, that ending was so worth it. I've watched the highlights...the Titanic Baseball song vid...etc...so many damn times in the last 24hrs....
Holy ****! The 1997 World Series Game 7 between the Indians and Marlins had over 67K people in attendance!!! That's a lot of people. I'm really curious about the attendance numbers. Is there more than that throughout history??
Jesus Christ!! The 1952 World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees had 70k people in attendance for Game 5!!!!! I need a time machine now!!!
So, so true.... the idea that fans, who are INHERENTLY biased, can pinpoint bias is just a silly notion. LOL.
