If it had just been tonite this might stand. But it’s not just tonight. It’s giving up runs in every playoff appearance that is the context he stepped into tonite. And then he gave up 3 more.
In his last appearance, Giles went out in the 9th inning of a tie ball game with Seager, Turner, and Bellinger coming up. He shut them down in order to go into extra innings. Then Hinch decided to push him for 6 outs and Giles lost it. Tonight, Hinch put him in for the 9th inning of a tie ball game with Seager, Turner, and Bellinger coming up. He didn't get a single out. At the end of the day, it seems like Giles is a complete head case.
Thats my exact point. I don’t trust him mentally. It all seems mental with him. Sometimes it seems like he is not even competing.
I don't trust Giles but I think he is still very unlucky, this happens in baseball. Josh Reddick is one of the unluckiest "clutch" hitters in MLB history. Doesn't mean he couldn't do something magical in games 5-7. If indeed Giles is mentally gassed then shut him down, but I believe that a lot of these results are random more than significant. Jansen has been awful this World Series but is still the most elite closer in baseball, for comparison.
Postseason Comparison 2017 Ken Giles 7 appearances 40 batters faced 5 walks 12 hits 3 homers 3 wild pitches 11.74 ERA 2015 Brad Lidge 10 appearances 55 batters faced 6 walks 12 hits 2 homers 0 wild pitches 4.26 ERA
"I can't rely on that stuff. It all lies within me. I need to take care of business with myself before I worry about anything else." He's done.
Yeah... He needs to be much better. Musgrove isn't finishing innings... Devo is leaving stuff up (but got away with it last night)... Harris, at his best, is still hittable. Gregerson may get a shot after all.... at this point, why not? He may just have enough veteran presence to actually live up to the moment. Otherwise, go back to the tandem/ride the hot hand system.
He’s part of the problem. But I have a hard time believing 2 hits (albeit 2 solo HR’s) is enough to win any game. That being said, sometimes u just have to be able to win 1-0 or 2-1 type games.
Hinch, with the philosophy of trusting guys and having faith pays off more than it backfires. That said, it does and will backfire at times. Statistically speaking, it does butt the facts to put a guy with a 7+era into a game where you cant afford to give up any runs when he has given up runs in 5 of his then previous 6 outings. If Giles needs a 2 run lead to succeed, it does merit a discussion about what his role should be.
Used peacock use Musgrove use... The Damned Bullpen coach if you need be but keep Giles out of the damn rotation especially in situations like last night
Being a closer is one of the toughest things to do in sports. It takes an extreme amount of mental toughness and faith in oneself. It sounds like Giles has lost that.
