I would argue that the majority just laugh it off rather than going through the trouble of pointing out how incredibly stupid this whole thing is.....but even if it was true that "90%" of people thought something stupid, it wouldn't sway me to believe the same stupid thing. Ad populum arguments are fallacious for a reason.

This is an instance where a common idiom is being spun as a racist comment....think about how stupid you have to be in order to actually take an idiom literally. Like many have said, it's likely that the people who initially whined about this were doing so cynically because while they aren't stupid enough to actually believe this BS, they knew that a lot of their supporters were that stupid and it was all an act for them.

BS. This is not ‘common idiom’ when talking about employees. If my boss referred to us as inmates, I’d be pissed too.

Add in the fact it’s an old Southern white man talking about young black men, there is an undeniable racial subtext to this. Is Bob McNair a prison warden then?

Okay, then you are stupid or ignorant. It's not the worst thing in the world I guess, but it really is a common idiom.

Watch this, it might help, it's illustrated.

    Yeah it is.

He’s the master. You’re the slave. If he wants you to jump, you do. If he wants to fire you he will.

How is it not a common phrase? Keeps establishment in order or business will go to chit.

Get your ass over there McNair. And this time, use the phrase prisoners to asylum to be safe of any way that a person of color could twist your words in to a negative outlook. Thanks.

Now this is a racist comment. Disgusting. Please clarify, Shady, what exactly are you calling Rick Smith?

They'd then accuse him of trying to say that they are insane. Anyone who would take an idiom literally either due to stupidity/ignorance or due to trying to cynically further a political narrative isn't someone that you can reason with.

I said it’s not a common idiom when referring to your own employees, but thanks for the unnecessary personal insults. He did not say ‘asylum’ by the way.

Here in a sports forum among biased and uninformed people, Hardly a representative sample of the public, and you should know that if you do "research and surveying". This suggests to me that you are either incompetent, a liar, or a fraud.
100% of the posters in this forum could think he's wrong but it wouldn't represent 90% of people and could very likely convince him of his views under the circumstances. Furthermore, you assume that people who are silent hold the opinions that you decide to assign them and I would say you are hugely in error on that. I'd wager that the vast majority of the public, of any race, are not offended by this comment nor do they care. Frankly, McNair's followup comments are more offensive than his first one.

Wrong. Please don’t tell me you think replacement players will fill stadiums and get people to watch. You really believe that? You think people will be lining up to buy joe blows Jersey? Players have all the power and the owners and league better play nice.

Lol. McNair had to hate that he got himself into this mess with his misquote. Other owners can't be happy as well.

    I mean....it is though.

The fact that he messed up the ending by saying "prison" instead of "asylum" doesn't change it in any way.

Political commentary on a sports forum typically has more voices from different backgrounds than any other forum as sports is a unifier. You’d never use a forum as a sample of the population but it’s not as narrow as you assume it is. And yes you have to research and survey for an upper level college class, not that foreign of a concept.

And I guess, like Bob McNair, that I should choose my words(or idioms) better as I wasn’t trying to be as narrow as this forum cause like you said it’s not a good representation of a population sample.

Again my issue with this so I can be clear is that it’s ignorant to call people ignorant or question their intelligence when getting offended about a remark that a very large group of people think is offensive. It’s fine you don’t think it’s offensive, a lot of things that offend some people don’t seem offensive to others. Just don’t question my, or anyone else’s intelligence if what you say or do is found to be offensive on a large scale. Don’t tell me how to feel about a older white southern man referencing his majority black employees as inmates to make a point about authority, even if it’s just a “saying”

He wasn't referring to the players.

He was referring to Goodell and his underlings in the league office.
