It's not a known figure of speech phrase but that's neither here or there... the point is thinking about how it could be received by your audience.

Sure, but if the audience is biased and irrationally emotional you shouldn't be condemned for something you really didn't say. What I read in this thread makes it seem like Bob McNair said he hates black people. That is what is being portrayed when people claim he is being racist. Bob McNair didn't say that. So what is the big deal?

Isn't the case. The owners own the TV deals/stadiums. There will always be people capable of filling in like the last strike. Players have less power than the owners and it isn't even close. Why do you think there contracts are so awful? If any sport should have guaranteed money it should be the NFL.

I'm pretty sure a black owner wouldn't be dumb enough to make that comment talk about black players.

Also, It may be time for Cal McNair to take over the Texans. Bob is getting up their in age and has had those health issue. Go ahead and transition to Cal in the offseason as Chairman of the Texans and let Bob retire. Bob can still be honorary Chair or something.

Majority rules in this case. You think Bob cares about his image? If he does he will adapt to todays society and clean his words up.

Anyone can make a stupid comment.

I agree about possibly having Cal take over.

If it was a black owner, you wouldn't be bending over backwards embarrassing yourself trying to spin it into an offensive comment. Hell, we wouldn't have even heard about it because the statement simply isn't offensive to anyone that isn't ignorant as hell.

One day after drawing a harsh rebuke from Texans offensive tackle Duane Brown for his "inmates running the prison" comment, Texans owner Bob McNair met with the players Saturday morning.

McNair expressed regret for his remarks to the players, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly.

McNair drew heavy criticism for his remarks locally and nationally, angering the players who work for him and other NFL players around the league.

"I know they were upset," McNair said. "I wanted to answer their questions. I told them if I had it to do over again I wouldn't use that expression."

McNair's comments were widely characterized as insensitive. He issued a statement of apology Friday morning after the remarks, made at a recent NFL owners meeting about players' anthem protests, surfaced.

All of the Texans' players are currently planning to travel on the team charter flight to Seattle on Saturday in advance of a road game Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Several Texans players contemplated walking out before practice Friday.

Two players didn't attend practice Friday, including wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, whose absence was characterized as a "personal day" by coach Bill O'Brien. Hopkins left NRG Stadium as a direct, angry reaction to what McNair said.

As did Texans rookie running back D'Onta Foreman, a third-round draft pick from Texas who grew up in Texas City, also left the stadium and didn't practice following the controversy, which remains a simmering issue for the Texans and other NFL players.

"I think the comments were disrespectful, I think it was ignorant, I think it was embarrassing," Brown said. "I think it angered a lot of players, including myself. We put our bodies and minds on the line every time we step on the field. To use an analogy of inmates in prison, I would say that's disrespectful. That's how I feel about it."

Texans coach Bill O'Brien, general manager Rick Smith and assistant head coach Romeo Crennel met with players for 90 minutes Friday to discuss the situation, pushing back the start of practice, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly.

By all accounts, the meeting went positively and players were able to voice their opinions and frustrations and were convinced to practice.

"When it happened, there's a thousand emotions going through your mind," Brown said. "Obviously, one of the emotions is to leave the building immediately. We decided to go to work. The situation's not over. It's something that we'll reconvene and talk about again, but we had practice."

If that is your smoking gun, you have lost the case. Good luck.

That's not how I took it. Bob McNair did the classy thing and expressed regret that some of his more ignorant players got offended by something that wasn't offensive and suggested that if he had it to do over again he wouldn't have said those words which makes sense given how dumb some of his players are. I would hope that if he had it to do over again, he'd have decided to break out the crayons in order to explain things at a level they would understand.

Hopefully that meeting is enough to educate the more embarrassingly ignorant players on the team such as Duane Brown, Nuk Hopkins, and Foreman.

I cannot believe how this has been blown out of proportion. McNair used a phrase to describe the current situation to the business of the NFL. At no point did he say anything racist or demean anyone. It's laughable to hear that players feel disrespected by his comments. Why? There are way too many people who read into any comments that anyone has to say to feel offended.

If the players want to "protest" and "demonstrate" because of comments that were taken out of context, by all means go ahead. Be sure to continue that protest and not accept the check that "racist" Bob McNair writes out to you every two weeks. When did everyone get so damned sensitive? If McNair had come out and dropped a racial epithet, then I could see people be up in arms, but the reaction to his comments is overblown.

Poor choice of words, but this is getting blown out of proportion. He apologized and I'm hoping he apologized to his team. I don't think we should start labeling him as a racist or anything of that level of severity yet (unless there is history of this stuff that I am unaware of).
