MDA has many great coaching qualities... unfortunately he also has some not so great qualities... Obviously he's great at devising an offensive strategy/system... Unfortunately he has no concept of how to expand his rotation so as to not burn guys out... it's been the same story for virtually his entire career... I use a term I call 'Al Davis syndrome'.... meaning somebody would have success - and then decide they knew it all and no longer had to listen to anybody else or adjust any of their thought processes.... Al Davis syndrome used to just exist primarily with guys who had won championships... like Ditka or Phil Jackson.... unfortunately in this day and age it seems too be prevalent with many who have had any level of success... and getting COY certainly doesnt help matters - lol! MDA is better than most... but not as good as he could be... and he aint no Pops...
The coach can only do so much. You can only judge him on what the players produce on the court because we as fans don't see him draw up the plays or hear him talking to the players in every time out. 7 seconds or less was the Nash offence, D'Antoni catered to his skill set and D'Antoni last season tried to cater to Harden's and now Paul's because he has two superstars to have run the offence. It will take time to gel but in the games Paul and Harden have played together, the team has looked good
Great coach in the regular season but only on the Offense end Good till the 2nd and 3rd round Never made the Finals Several weaknesses
he's a historical offensive coach, but overall he's just a regular above-avg level coach. one of his big flaws we saw in the po's is he'll stick to a short rotation no matter what. sometimes u have to take a hit with yoru gameplan.
Paging @heypartner Can you please post a coupl videos of the team running plays, because clearly, we have fans that don't understand what is going on out there on the court. Thanks in advance.
Gotta say, OP lookin' a little silly at this point. I'm guessing OP would be the first to admit it, though, and would be happy that he was wrong.
Nope, It's just Harden. He can even make you coaching this team a playoffs team. He's just that good.
Yup, I was wrong. He's shown this season he can adapt: we're running at a crazy slow pace, added new plays according to cater to our new personnel and found a way to maximise CP3 and Harden together as well as manage injuries and bring others along. I'm not going to say I am 100% convinced he's elite though, he has something to prove in the play-offs still. Time-outs, short rotations and lack of adaption over a 7-game series has been his achilles heel so let's hope we will see a bigger rotation as he's been kind of promising and showing lately To anyone saying he's flawless or elite now just because we won 60 games (he was during Suns days, but I thought he hadn't changed with the game and was stuck in his ways so I was wrong about that) and you have to admit at the time I had good points that you still could argue over. He relies on Harden to make plays, on CP3 to, not a lot of offensive sets though there are definitely more this year.
He doesn't just go through the motions and by-the-book like some coaches, which I like. Even things that seem obvious, like staggering Paul and Harden's minutes so one of them is always on the court, is something I don't think every coach would consider (ahem, McHale). Also, I like some of the adjustments he's made to ensure a strong defensive team is out there to start games, and bringing Ryan off the bench.
There are not many options...... JVG, Adelman did not have elite point guard play. The only one was McHale and he wasn't a real real coach.
Uh, JB Bickerstaff says hello. Remember, HE had Harden as well and we were going nowhere. Wasn't til MDA came along that we catapulted to another level. I believe it's a combination here of good coach and good GM. MDA's system is MOST effective when you have unselfish players running the point and sharpshooters around them. Kobe wanted his shots in LA, he didn't care to run the MDA system. Same with Melo in NY. Everyone thought Dantoni's was finished and his system no longer worked. But now, paired up with a smart GM who understands and has brought in the right pieces. . . . .
I think this season has more than proven his abilities as a coach. The key for D'Antoni has always been that he needs the right personnel. New York and LA were bad fits. Phoenix and Houston were perfect for him.
