For the many who like to call Hinch a robot and whatnot, Beltran is 10-27 lifetime against Porcello--by far the most AB's of any Astro against him, and the best avg (save for Marwin/Springer going 3-7 in a smaller sample). Gattis is 0-3, if you're wondering. Glad he's not going by the book.
Ok, I can understand wanting to get Reddick more ABs against RHP. I just like Bregman in the 2 hole because it offers him more protection and I trust a vet like Reddick further down. Clearly this offense can be potent no matter what the order, but in my opinion consistency matters. Besides Bregman/Reddick, today he has Oso Blanco in #8 hole and Marwin again at # 5. I think Oso is a better fit behind Correa, and Marwin performs better further down in lineup. Splits seem to support that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If only they played 100+ games with certain lineup patterns that established previous consistency! Reddick has batted 2nd for most of his lineup appearances vs RHP this year... that is the more consistent option, and it almost made the difference between winning/losing yesterday.
I don't think the book exists anymore for over-the-hill Beltran... unless you want to treat it like Major League 2, when they sent in a 40+ year old Roger Dorn to pinch hit simply because the relief pitcher used to always pitch him inside (and they wanted him to try and induce a HBP). I'll take Gattis' current ability and potential vs. Beltran's current ability and potential, regardless of past results.
Sure, it would make for a more challenging bullpen game... but if you had to look at which bullpen is in better shape TODAY, regardless of rain, it would overwhelmingly lean towards Houston. If they go to tomorrow... Sale is on full rest, and Price and Kelly are fully available again.
