When Japan surrendered, it lost a God. If not for the emperor decision, the fight would have continued. And if not for the US and World decision to allow Japan self determination, an amazing gesture after all the evil is has done, the "war" would have continued. If and when the US is completely defeated, surrender unconditionally, but allowed to continue self determination, I think its culture and people would change. Not focusing on militarization and directing that money toward your people has quite a bit of advantages.

On this day (August 15th) in 1945, Emperor Hirohito broadcasts the news of Japan’s surrender to the Japanese people.

Although Tokyo had already communicated to the Allies its acceptance of the surrender terms of the Potsdam Conference several days earlier, and a Japanese news service announcement had been made to that effect, the Japanese people were still waiting to hear an authoritative voice speak the unspeakable: that Japan had been defeated.

That voice was the emperor’s. In Japan’s Shinto religious tradition, the emperor was also divine; his voice was the voice of a god. And on August 15, that voice—heard over the radio airwaves for the very first time—confessed that Japan’s enemy “has begun to employ a most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is indeed incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives.” This was the reason given for Japan’s surrender. Hirohito’s oral memoirs, published and translated after the war, evidence the emperor’s fear at the time that “the Japanese race will be destroyed if the war continues.”

A sticking point in the Japanese surrender terms had been Hirohito’s status as emperor. Tokyo wanted the emperor’s status protected; the Allies wanted no preconditions. There was a compromise. The emperor retained his title; Gen. Douglas MacArthur believed his at least ceremonial presence would be a stabilizing influence in postwar Japan. But Hirohito was forced to disclaim his divine status. Japan lost more than a war—it lost a god.

You can literally make a thread like this for every developed country in the world. When compared to every other country, the USA looks bad.

70 Japanese kill themselves every day. Has one of the highest rate in the world. The rate is likely much higher due to how the government sweep many suicides under the rug.

    Many reasons.

Tradition of honorable suicide (it's not a sin to kill yourself, but an honor in defeat).

Changes in Job. Like the US, there is no longer lifetime employment. And in Japan, job and financial security is at the very top. Many kill themselves when they are out of a job and can't find one.

There is also a culture of hiding your true feeling. Complaining and anger is not a trait you see much. Mental illness is still taboo. Not dealing with your true emotion can lead to isolation and depression.

Maybe if we flood them with cheap opioids and narcotics, we can pay for our wall in Mexico and give the wealthy more tax breaks.

You do realize most of our violence isn't from immigration, though, right? Immigrant communities are actually less violent in the United States. Maybe the rest of the United States should model itself on the immigrant communities that have developed here.

Your thread is a joke. You are a joke. Both are being treated as such.

Evil which it took over 60 years for Japan to formally apologize for and only have to pay for 40 women who remained alive in return ? No more critisizing for the crimes!
Even now it is not taught in japanese schools, most people don't believe it was true, and the government even said they might take back their apology.

But yes. Everything is okay in Japan.

    Thread summary:

Alt right poster: Japan has no violence or gun deaths because of immigration control. We should be like Japan and build a wall.

Rational poster: but Japan has toughest gun laws on the world

Alt right poster: nothing to do with violence. Antarctica has zero gun deaths.

Rational poster: didn't you just say we should be like Japan?

Alt right poster: no it's because Japanese people are not violent even if you have guns.

Rational poster: um WWII? And didn't you guys argue that it was because of immigration laws?

Alt right: we should be like Japan and build a wall so we can be all white like they are all Japanese... We need a wall because we can't build a moat with Mexico and those crazy Canadians.

Rational poster: so we should be like Japan and have tighter gun laws too tight?

Alt right: no Japan is different culture which is different than ours we can not be like them.

Rational poster: so make up your mind?

Alt right: stop calling us names this is our safe space.

    Complex issue.

Refer back to the San Francisco treaty of peace with Japan. They were required to pay back essentially nothing (just a few hundreds million to the international red cross). It can help, but there is no amount that is adequate for the evil done to east and southeast Asia (comfort women, forced labor, mass civilian killing). An honest apology would go a long way, but that didn't happen and when it did, it was more political (I have to do it) then honest. Still most have considered it closed and moved on. A significant important minority, in SK and China will not (understandably) ever. And when comfort women issue became widely known in the 90s, many more in SK, China, the world and even in Japan called for former apologies from the Japanese government.

Also remember that soon after the war was over, the US wanted the narrative to be "bad leaders" as reason for war. They wanted the Japanese people to be supportive of them (tall task given 150k innocent were killed by the bombs). It worked. The Japanese people see themselves as also victim of the Japanese imperial government. They only wanted peace. With that narrative, lack of education for the war (there were education, but mostly footnotes when it comes to the evils done) were pushed by the government and the public (those that know) didn't complain about the lack of honestly and truth (goes back to the people culture of not complaining). Many don't understand how much evil was done by the Japanese military and bought into the victim mentality.

Then there is the conservative, nationalist that have a dangerous narrative. When the comfort women and other war crimes became issues to the world in the 90s (or 80s, can't remember), the people of Japan think that their government should compensate and apology. This causes a backlash from the right wing. They started a new narrative - Japan did nothing wrong. Abe (and others), wanting this group support, allow that narrative to stand. This further fuel anger in China, SK and elsewhere. Abe, needing to tell the world one thing and continuing nationalist support from the right wing, did what he did. There were some period of quiet and unrest since... see recent incidents of violence toward Japanese in China. Messy politics. The tension may build over time and become dangerous w.r.t China. Good thing Japan isn't allowed to wage war, but their "self-defense" military isn't a joke and rise of it (NK is yet another great excuse to expand) is a bit concerning. (this is why Trump statement suggesting that Japan should have their own nuke is dangerous).

The "god" was against the war but wasn't god enough to stop the military. Almost couldn't end the war as the coup was happening...

Exactly. Culture matters. Very hard to make analogies without including that. If we want to 'be like Japan', we would need to really 'be like Japan', in all ways. Which would make us ... not America.

Exactly. Knowing the history, culture will help to understand. But some won't because they are so tied to an agenda and a view.

That's right, that's why strict gun laws in states work well for those states but would fail in other states. Because say in california - the culture isn't to shoot people up. But in Texas it is. So gun laws work in california but not texas, because of the start cultural differences.

If no gun, there isn't gun crimes. That's a given. But you can't use Japan to promote gun restriction. Their crime rates is extraordinary low at pretty much everything due to their unique culture. Look at UK, maybe Australia...

You said that nothing could compensate but that's clearly false. It COULD help before almost every single victim were dead of old age branded in shame and poverty!

Japan commited heinous crimes of which neither the goverment neither the nation itself are at all apologetic about and had to compensate almost nothing in contrast with Germany where the law and public education ensured that the attrocities would be a source of national shame and reppetance.

Now we have the Japanese nation where supposedly shame is considered a virtue, who have commited attrocities and refuses to even aknowledge them.
    It's clearly hypocritical double standards.
I have never heard anyone say "oh what if a nazi apologize or not? So what if the german government and nation aknowledge the holocaust or not? The jewish survivors and their children won't find any solace."

There's no "point" in this thread, because it is based on a false article.
You don't want to be like Japan, and Japan doesn't want to be like America. Everyone should see if they can improve their own societies by copying and integrating SOME things from others if they are proved to improve societies.

    Here is the right analogy:
An exaggerating article like that could be written by a Japanese journalist about USA. Look how in the USA women are considered equal. Look how in the USA, workers have rights to have vacations. Look how in the USA bullying is taken seriously. Look how in the USA, racism is considered unacceptable.
Then there could be japanese posters in a forum saying " we are japan not USA, and here according to Confucius everyone has their role in society! Women are not equal to men! And we are not racists! What if we daily discriminate against non Japanese people? That's normal here!"

To which american people would just shake their heads, same as non americans shake their heads when they see the daily mass shootings and slaughter of innocents by guns in american soil.

Since immigrants to the United States commit less crime than American born citizens, perhaps we should work very hard to do everything possible to bring more immigrants into the United States. We know that they are less violent when in the American system, so we wouldn't have to change everything to be like Japan.

All we need to do is get as many immigrants as possible into our nation and the violence and crime go down.
