Not to detract from the seriousness in Puerto Rico, but how many of u would like to see Carmen Yulin

Not really, it's pretty much an impartial response to someone who sees a person in a country with no electricity who spends their time and resources making custom tee shirts and finding ways to get on TV instead of organizing relief efforts. Had she at least gone to the meetings, she wouldn't have been talking to the media out of ignorance, she'd have actually known what was going on and how she could help make things better....but that clearly wasn't a priority. Again, I don't know her politics, and I don't care. I'm judging her 100% on how she handled this crisis.

You certainly didn't see Mayor Turner doing things like that, he was too busy being a good mayor and trying to get relief organized and out to the people who needed it. It's competence vs incompetence, not left vs right or whatever.

 

She has a decent educational pedigree (BU, Carnegie-Mellon), but her political experience is confined to being a State Rep in PR and the Mayor of San Juan. Sylvester Turner has the same experience, but on a bigger scale. She does not have the resume I want to see in a presidential candidate. When the clown show is over, I want a real professional in the Oval Office. And, as a practical matter, she is already starting with something like 4 strikes against her: (1) woman, (2) minority, (3) from a territory, and (4) not a member of either of the 2 major mainland parties. How would she have any shot whatsoever?

Ah, so are saying that she'd be a good candidate simply because she doesn't like Trump then....in that case, it makes more sense than you actually thinking that she'd be a good candidate and this really should have been in the D&D.

LOL you can't be serious. She spent her time making custom tee shirts with the little resources available to her and actively avoided going to meetings that would help her find out what was actually going on so that she could help bring the most aid to her people possible as quickly as possible.

I mean....wow. What she did was the exact opposite of good leadership in crisis and that's inarguable. Grandstanding and diverting resources to making tee shirts and hunting down camera crews during a crisis where people's lives are in danger simply cannot be seen as good leadership or management in crisis.

 

You're just completely making up a relationship between how much time she spends on x leading to y conclusion.

I've seen no evidence that shows if she just spent more time going to FEMA meetings or the like, her city and country would be better off.

You just don't like her approach. It's not fact based in any way. Nor is it impartial. If it was impartial... it'd be fact based.

If she spent the time going to those meetings and educating herself as to what was actually going on, she'd have known what she needed to do in order to get the aid that was already in the country to her people as quickly as possible. One major thing they needed was drivers in order to get the aid off of shipping containers and delivered to those who need it. That should have been her number 1 priority....but she didn't even know about it because she didn't go to the meetings to find out what was going on, to find out where the bottleneck was and what steps she could take to eliminate it.

You are arguing in support of someone who chose to grandstand ignorantly instead of actually helping her people. A real leader would have spent their time directing all available resources to speed that aid arriving rather than making tee shirts and finding cameras to stand in front of.

This shouldn't be a partisan thing, I don't know her politics and I don't care about them. I just see no reason to support ignorant grandstanding from those who are supposed to be leaders in times of crisis....but well, that's kind of what you and the OP are doing.

To be clear, I'm not saying she is or isn't grandstanding. I don't know her true motivations, just as I don't know what details she does/doesn't have on the state of her country and what they need most, the best way to get help, etc.

If I'm guessing, I'd say she is definitely grandstanding to a degree. After all... she's a politician. But I also suspect her grandstanding is also a calculated move not principally about being selfish or greedy, but about staying in the news and getting more and more help, be it from the US or other nations, as it seems to have helped.

After all, as usual, from a grandstanding perspective, it started as typically with Trump being ultra aggressive and offensive, after he got offended by his administration's inadequate response to the crisis. Because, after all, it's not like everyone thought he and the US were responding effectively until Carmen Yulin started wearing different t-shirts. It was being called out by tons and tons of people, as his administration basically went radio silent on the disaster for 4+ days after a brief presser after the hurricane hit, as Trump feuded, again via Twitter, about North Korea, and the NFL. While the hurricane's devastating impact on PR hit everybody, including local politicians, harder than predicted, the local politicians did nonetheless emphasize very early on the island was basically destroyed infrastructure wise. Meanwhile Trump and his administration still basically continued to ignore it... until on a Monday, when critcisms of their response began to grow louder, so he began turning his twitter attention over to it, blaming the island's prognosis on its infrastructure and economy and praising his admin's efforts.... even though it was 5 days post destruction before any senior US officials visited the island, and not until their return until the admin's support kicked up into overdrive, and even then the week+ to lift the Jones act...

Basically, the point being, it is only at this point, after much Trump grandstanding, AS USUAL, that we start to even hear Carmen Yulin's name.

So is she herself grandstanding?? Probably. Absolutely. Has it seemed to work? Seems like it...

 

Yeah but see, I'm not. She's been called out by mayors of neighboring cities for her ignorance and for her not showing up to those meetings to find out what was going on.

When you say that her BS is "working", it really isn't, the aid was always essentially there, it was just delayed by not having the local drivers show up to deliver it. Now if she had gone to the meetings to find out what the problems were, she might have been able to direct her resources towards helping fix that problem and speed the aid to the people who needed it.....but she opted to grandstand instead.

Her actions are simply indefensible and the only people supporting them are those who are happy about her "calling out Trump" or whatever. it's 100% political for those people but if they took an objective look at things, they couldn't support her actions.

 

LOL, that's a photo op, nothing more. Give me the person who finds out what is going on with getting the aid people need and working to get it there the quickest over the person finding some water to stand in for a photo op. The person more concerned with grandstanding and photo opportunities is not a real leader.

I'm not sure why that matters or how it points to her not knowing where some of the bottlenecks in the recovery were.

Again, she seems to have known about it.
Also, the aid wasn't "always there". The level of the response and urgency in delivering help from the administration was slow and inadequate, and criticized, and was pointed out as such by many many people not named Carmen Yulin long before Carmen Yulin became more of a household face.

She opted to grandstand after Trump started his twitter act, which, as usual, was aggressive, offensive, in poor taste, and sexist in nature (hence the nasty shirt... trump thinks aggressive women are nasty)

I've taken an objective look at things... and have explained my objective view.

Fortunately, I wasn't and am not on PR where people were [and are] suffering for days with no sense of urgency on the part of the US admin to address this disaster.... until it became politicized.

Both sides at this point would probably do better to stop politicizing it.
