The difference of course is that groups like BLM, Antifa, neo-Nazis, and California (LOL) don't have legitimate causes. If the government truly became tyrannical, fighting against them would be a legitimate cause. Now that said, there would be plenty of soldiers who would go along with whatever was ordered, but the presence of a legitimate cause would erode the support for the tyrannical government over time especially if there was a persistent resistance.

One of the reasons why we've never gone off that edge is that in the end libertarianism has won out over authoritarianism and we haven't completely ditched the rights of the people in order to make things easier or to feel safer.....other countries have and they've paid the price for it.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with my reply. Let me rephrase it to "the vast majority of citizens in modern, democratic and wealthy countries".
    What now?

Yes. At least to the point where whether the citizens had automatic weapons or not. I suspect if you were to ask the military what they fear more, citizens with automatic weapons, or citizens with hunting rifles...it might be the latter.

If we were to pose this to the founder's...would they agree? Or would they think that the amendment needed to extend out even more, to things like tanks, missiles, etc? Interesting point to ponder....

I'm going to save you the trouble. Do not debate him. He has never once pretended he didn't know everything.

In the NBA forum when he disagreed with the majority of the NBA players on something, he basically said he knew more about the game than them..

it's still an ad populum argument, which as you probably don't know is a logical fallacy. That said, just because your logic is faulty doesn't mean you are wrong, so I'll explain it further. Those countries you speak of are some of the same countries that turned away from democracy and gave the world fascism, nazism, communism, and other really really awful authoritarian nonsense that plagued the world. I'm not concerned with the direction they take with government or their input on what rights should be defended and what rights should be eliminated to empower the government.

Let's face it, when those countries screw up yet again, it'll be the US they turn to for liberation.

What should make you optimistic is that the generals/admirals/commanders/etc. are not going to give an order to attack civilians simply to support a dictator. Especially Trump. They are not in love with him to begin with. If he gave that type of order and the system was collapsing, they'd just as soon take him out of the equation and do the old "military taking over to ensure peaceful transition" nonsense.

If we went the dictator route, the military would simply usurp Trump. They may keep him around as a puppet, but he isn't someone that's going to hold sway over them. Military backed dictatorships only thrive with the guy at the top has the loyalty of the men in command of the military.

Still not sure whether he's just a s***ty troll, most of the stuff he says is so brutally delusional.

I honestly do not understand why we entertain ignorant thoughts like suggesting Bush/Obama/Trump/Clinton are going to turn into overnight dictators and some how command the military to do their bidding. This includes the logic that an AR15 is not going to stop drone attacks or tank attacks or ICMB attacks ect...

The true concern is the collapse of society and government. Regardless of what you believe, our society is pretty fragile. We have already seen the effect when a single city can be shut down. Imagine if there was a nationwide crisis with food or water or power or fuel. At this point, do you trust those in power to do whats right or do you give your population a chance to fight if those who are in power refuse to do the right thing. This is basically what the 2nd amendment is about. If you honestly thing this nation will never see a crisis that will bring its to its knees ...

Do you see how Trump is the outlier here where if he had the competence and the means, out of all those listed, he would be the one who actually would love to be a dictator due to his naiveness and lack of self-awareness along with his massive ego and narcissism?
    I
Not saying he's even close to a dictator but that's due to checks and balances and him just being an idiot.

Thank goodness Trump is grossly incompetent to the point of not being able to differentiate between life and health insurance.

And thank goodness for our institutions that limit the damage of a grossly incompetent moron who thinks the presidency is a royalty position.

It's why he praises individuals like Duterte, Erdogan and Putin. In his eyes, they know how to accumulate power the right way.

Holy moly....this is the guy who was supposedly the first victim of the shooter, was scheduled to tell his story and has suddenly vanished?

This entire incident has been really, really strange and getting stranger by the minute.

I can't believe this isn't a bigger story at the moment.

p.s. On a separate topic,I had to find this thread 4 pages back. The Las Vegas shooting was less than 15 days ago.....it seems like it was months ago. It's unbelievable how fast the news cycle flows in 2017.

Between protests, CHIP ended, executive ordered Trumpcare, Perry's DOE catering to coal, threats to blow up North Korea twice, poor PR campaign in Puerto Rico and the hurricanes, it's been a lot of s-hit to digest from our current administration, no doubt about it. Hell, I'm probably forgetting other issues too this administration keeps shoveling to us.

I don't think they will ever find this security guard ever alive if at all.
He wanted to "come clean" and right before that he's nowhere to be found.

Place was ridiculously tight on NYE. Don't blame them, just such a shitty thing to happen.

Air bnb tanked end of 2017 for my place. I've never had Nye not rented out, not even Thanksgiving. All first time. Luckily, Valentine's day is.
