Im not going to argue for or against, but you have to understand what you're arguing against. I know its clique to use 'parking lot sales' or 'craigslist' sales or 'gun show loopholes' but thats not what they are. They are private to private sales. You can't limit some private to private sales and allow others ... just because people will find legal ways to circumvent whatever law comes up. There are a couple stipulations that limit private to private transactions, one of them being you're not allowed to sell to a known felon. Again, how can you prove this? You have to prove the person knew they were a felon and then you have to prove there was a transaction in the first place. A second is that you can not transfer ownership across state lines. That is easy enough to get around by 'lending' your gun to your relative/friend in another state in exchange to them 'lending' you money. At the end of the day, nobody is going to openly sell guns across state lines so the intent behind is its effective. My personal feeling is that I will ALWAYS go through a FFL even if they are my neighbor. I would make exceptions for someone I trusted, like a close friend or family, but I would never risk it otherwise. The problem with ending or limiting private to private sales is that you're effectively creating a gun registry database. And while I don't know any right or left wing radicle people, I can tell you that pretty much all of the people I know who buy guns are staunchly against this. Personally for me, I am not against a gun registry database.
When people attempt to use this to push gun control legislation, I think it's important to point out that there's no gun control legislation that would be legal that would have prevented this tragedy. When a person with a completely clean record that is as wealthy as he was wants to do something like this, it's pretty much impossible to stop it. There's no background check or waiting period that would have helped. Basically if you use this to push gun control, you are just pushing gun control for the sake of pushing gun control, not to prevent acts like this in the future. So long as you don't lie about it, I don't have a problem with it.
If it is public knowledge (like what they wanted to do in Australia a couple of years ago) then I would assume they don't want people knowing they have a firearm in their house. Lots of reasons why they would want to keep that information away from nutters and criminals.
They are both capable of automatic fire; they sound much the same. As soon as I heard the tape, I knew it was auto fire.
Yeah if it was public information that would put a target on their backs for every criminal looking to steal weapons. Given the problem we have with illegally obtained guns being used to commit crimes to begin with it doesn't sound like a great idea to publish a map of where they can find guns to steal fairly easily. I mean the numbers are something like 80% of guns used or carried by criminals during crimes are illegally obtained.
Right. I thought you were differentiating sound between an illegal fully automatic weapon vs a legal modified semi automatic.
Just freaking ban anything that's not a hand-gun or a hunting rifle. Anything that's designed to kill at long range and kill numerous people in seconds should not be allowed. When was the last time a long-range semi-automatic rifle was used by a civilians in self-defense?????? This is so stupid.
It's still crazy that we don't know a motive yet. Since when do people do things like this just for the hell of it?
I really don't understand the argument against this. Citizens should not be allowed to stockpile weapons of this sort. Tighter laws won't make something like this impossible, but it for sure can make it far less likely to happen.
Given that nearly 80% of gun crimes are committed with weapons not legally purchased, you think that cracking down on legal guns will make a dent in those numbers? LOL, I don't believe you really think that. There's no law you could have passed that would have made any difference in this instance and I'm pretty sure you know that.
The simple straight forward answer is gun confiscation. We will eventually come to the point where this will happen...sometime in the distant future. Its a lot easier to confiscate guns if you know who had what.
And then you just open another can of worms of the previous law abiding citizens, now resorting to purchasing illegal firearms. A large amount of firearms are bought for home protection. So the government rounds all those firearms up, the homeowner is now holding a baseball bat while old mate hardened criminal is literally licking his lips as he kicks open the front door with his illegal firearm drawn
What is the statistic for mass shootings? How common are mass shootings in countries where such guns are banned? And where did this this shooter get his guns from?
So you don't care about like 99% of all people shot, just the 1% that you can use to push for certain legislation? Also, as of right now, no one knows where the guns came from.
