Right before he praises Chris Clark. Not Mancz. Not Martin. His example of coaching is Chris Clark! Not to mention we saw footage where Rick and coach were discussing roster moves. That was the same Hard Knocks season that he raved about Mallett. Things only started getting sour between Mallett and the coach after he was late for practice. This is all on film.
He coaches what he's given, and Chris Clark is the best OT on the team. Worst in the league in 2016, best Texans OT 2017. Think about that. And note he didn't say Clark was a good player, he said he's old and has leadership qualities. As to Mancz and Martin, it's all right there in the quote... “No. I control what I control, which is coaching and what you see on the field. I really enjoy coaching these players. I really enjoy our guys up front. They are tough, they show up to work every day. You look at a guy like Chris Clark, (who has) played a lot of football in this league. He’s got great leadership qualities. We talked about Jeff Allen. Then you got a young guy like Nick Martin, who’s played, I think, very well. Then you have undrafted guys that have played a lot of football for us and played hard in (Greg) Mancz and Kendall Lamm. And then you have two young guys, (Julién) Davenport and (Kyle) Fuller, who we think are going to be real good. So, look, I really enjoy coaching those guys and I look forward to, every day in the offensive meeting, seeing them and coaching them and getting them ready for the game.” He loves Martin and thinks he can be great. Oh the irony. This is what Bill Polian said about O'Brien on Mike & Mike: "The Good: The great coaching job Bill O'Brien did on Thurday night... I've never in my life seen a position group decimated like their TEs were... and he figured out a way to win the game with a rookie QB who hardly could take the snap, literally they put him in the shotgun to make him more comfortable and they figured out a way to win the game. So great credit to him and great credit to his coaching staff on the shortest of weeks and they were on the road for Pete's sake... Unbelievable. Great, great coaching job." Now you may think you know more about pro football than Bill Polian, but you don't. That's why he's a 6 time NFL Executive Of The Year and in the Hall Of Fame and you're not.
Funny that around the league BoB is considered a really good coach. Clutchfans says he is not and if you disagree, you are delusional/naive.
So who are you giving credit for the talent? Who gets credit for getting Mancz in there? Did O'Brien draft Martin? Were they horrible players and then Bill O'Brien performed magic and turned them into pro quality players? Or were they just players that had talent and the GM and scouts brought them in? In hindsight, after the Patriots game, do we still give the coaching credit for the Bengals game? Maybe Deshaun is just that special. After all, the best plays of the game were him improvising. My whole point is it is a fine line when you try to separate the GM from the coach on an average team. Are the good players good because of the coaching? Or are they just good players? I like O'Brien. I really do. I think he is a good coach. But not a great offensive mind. Rick Smith has stacked the team with talent on the defensive side. He also, until now, has failed to get talent on the offensive side. Deshaun might just save both of their jobs. The end of the Patriots game? That was definitely on coaching. The team had the personnel to get one yard. Just one yard. The coach could have called timeout immediately after the pass to Hopkins. The coach could have had Stephen Anderson and Ryan Griffin (taller guys) in the endzone for the hail mary play. All those were coaching mistakes.
I blame him when the offense sucks, but I also have to credit him when the offense explodes. And it wasn't Deshaun making something out of nothing, either. I have never seen a Dick LeBeau defense look so discombobulated and beat up. Great job, Coach O'Brien.
Bill O'Brien is working hard, getting better every day. I'm not ready to put him in the Hall of Fame yet. He's got a long ways to go.
BOB can flat out coach. X and O's and discipline Watson making almost no mistakes and i don't think he throws that if it wasn't close to end of half A lot is on Watson but a lot is on BOB. Say what you want about 9-7 but he gets it done. He has Watson playing all pro ball last two games. Its beyond anyone's expectations
This team been a quarterback away since BOB got here. That being said, thats on the front office but the front office also gave him a great defense BOB was conservative on offense cause his only shot at winning was ball control
It was an unstoppable offense today. Not sure if it was the players or better coaching but it looked good. Watson made it look easy
all i heard coming into this game was how lebeau has coached defenses for centuries upon centuries, innovator of the zone blitz. The rookie won't know what hit him. That's what I wanted to see from B.o.b, make it easier for your qb. We ran more screens today than the entire season last year. =)
