Obviously this situation means nothing in regards to womens' right in SA. Men "guardians" have still the right to deny the woman from driving or even going out of the house.

It's very interesting what is happening right now with the new crown prince. He allowed women to go to a stadium last week now to drive and couple of months ago to work as cashiers in supermarkets and to get a copy of their marriage certificate.
But it's quite sad really. All these are not in an effort to improve human rights but due to his war with the clergy, his war with Iran and to consolidate his power from his powerful uncle the deposed crown prince who is on house arrest.

It's an attempt of an economic revolution and change to the national identity of Saudis only masquerading as a social revolution.
There should be more things happening soon. He arrested 30 intellectuals and influentials clergy and he has started the embargo with Qatar to fight off Iran's influence. He even took the power away from religion police and even humiliated them.

Either he will succeed and from now on slowly Saudis will start identifying themselves with the house of Saud as a nation over the priests as an islamocracy OR it will be a huge implosion.

You should really grow up. Seriously. It would be news to many that I have anger towards other minorities.

I have empathy for all the women in Saudi that are treated like property. Maybe women there would have something resembling equality if our country weren't such a hypocrite on human rights. There's no question that Islam in large swaths of the world has incredible issues with basic human rights. Whether that's due to poverty, culture, or Islam itself I suppose is the argument.

I thought I read that the only Muslim countries that does not allow women to drive legally is Saudi Arabia?

Welcome to the 20th century, SA would be more appropriate. But I couldn't even said that. They are still so horribly backward.

I wonder why they are so backwards, hmmmm... You guys see things so black and white, it's so stunningly obvious how complicated the dynamics are in that country. Yet people just make blanket statements like ignorant idiots as it's the easy thing to do. Wow no wonder Russia is having a field day with power of information and misinformation....people are idiots.

    This thread sucks.

And any grown-ass man who uses "fam" in a sentence or in conversation or really anytime, anywhere, needs to re-evaluate things. All of the things.

Maybe they got some words of wisdom from Master Yoda? :D

    Drive, the women may.

"Saudi Arabia's under-secretary for curricula has been fired and exiled to Dagobah after an official Saudi social studies textbook included a photo of Jedi Master Yoda. In the photo, Yoda can be seen sitting next to Saudi Arabia's King Faisal at the 1945 ceremony that created the United Nations. The textbook page began circulating on social media last week.'

let's put the hypocrisy /ignorance /Urban legends to the test (fact checks) :

a Saudi women enjoy the following :
    • free monthly allowance for unemployed/not willing to work
    • those unsponsored by their families have 3x the above allowance
    • widows/divorced receive an extra funds
    • widows/divorced eligible for a free ownership of a house or equivalent value in cash
    • golden standard free health care
    • free Education
    • equal pay
    • paid maternity leave

if you manage to get one of that , i would be happy for you , the argument that they can afford it b/c it's a rich country is flawed , Venezuela-Canada with equivalent Population have more natural resources

IMHO , the Basic human rights is given to Saudis even if took along time vs. earned through continuous struggle in the US

*your apologies are accepted in advance

I personally know a very controlling husband that love his wife. She can't work, can't drive, can't go anywhere without him, can't even cook and must eat what he provide... Oh he provided plenty. He has his own way of loving her. She is miserable but due to her up-bringing and devotion to her god, she cannot leave him... A sin she cannot commit.

Controlling husband does not allow wife to drive. I chop you up if you dare. Her escape is to leave him but she doesn't because it's a sin to.

He is stuck in the past. Doesn't think he's doing anything wrong. Not at all religious but cultural on his part. She not willing to leave is due to her faith. She said so herself. I can handle the suffering to avoid eternal hell.

    GTFO with this crap.
Equal pay? For what job? Women weren't allowed to work for most jobs and still aren't hired.

Free education?? Very free when the so called guardian has the right to prohibit the woman from studying or even going out of the house.

Paid maternity leave? From the imaginary job. No matter that until last month women didn't even have the right to get the copy of their marriage certificate.

As for welfare checks and free health care, men get them as well and they don't have to be imprisoned in their houses.

This is the most disgusting post I have seen in a good while, talking about giving basic human rights.

I hope you get locked up for the rest of your life in a golden cage with lots of money and "free health care" and are never allowed to leave or dress as you want, and see how you like it you despicable misogynistic pig.

Curious. Is having money more important than personal freedom to you?
