You're wrong. Like Brock Osweiler and Rahim Moore, guys O'Brien and RAC both benched. You can't have it both ways. If Rick runs the draft -- which he does -- and Rick decides who is on the 53 man roster -- which he does -- you can't blame the coaches for the lack of talent/depth. Mike Vrabel didn't go get Johnthan Banks. Rick and Jimmy Raye did. If you think we've got a great offensive line, Rick gets the credit. If you think we're better off with $21 million in cap space and AJ Bouye a Jaguar, Rick gets the credit. Demeco Ryans, Brandon Brooks, Glover Quin, Conner Barwin, Ben Jones, DJ Swearinger, etcetera, etcetera... all succeeding elsewhere, all on Rick. But if Rick is such a great GM, why don't we have anything to show for it in his 11 years on the job? And why did it take Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips just 2 years to win a Super Bowl after getting away from Rick?
Kubiak inherited a championship-ready roster that Elway and John Fox built. There are a lot of reasons that the Broncos won the super bowl, Kubiak isn't in the top 5 of those reasons.
Also, this logic only works if you ignore two things: 1) That QB carousel is a problem of his own making. Especially for a supposed QB master. 2) The Texans play a bottom tier schedule in a bottom tier division.
No coach would have done what he did with those quarterbacks because no one else would have had that quarterback turnover.
O'Brien is a smart guy. Knows if he never drafts a "franchise QB" he's never on the clock when it comes to his success. That and lucking out on the worst division in football doesn't hurt either.
There's no such thing as a qb master/guru if you have a bottom tier qb. Most coaches would go 2-14 with the qbs obrien has had to work with. The reason there was a qb carousel was because he didn't have a good qb to begin with. If you have two quarterbacks, you have none. I thought people would learn their lesson when they wanted kubiak fired and he ended up winning the Super Bowl. Obrien is a much better coach, if kubiak can win a super bowl then so can obrien.
Let me ask you some questions. What coach and GM would think that it was a good idea to roll out Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallet, TJ Yates, Tom Savage and Brock Osweiler as your starting QB's over a 3 year time period? What HC would twice spent the entire summer with Hoyer and Savage as his #1 QB and then yank them and change his mind after one half of football? Which organization would give a QB 4/72 (Osweiler) when they have never even spoken to the QB or met him? Tell me what other organization would make similar mistakes and still have their jobs safe? Not to mention having someone say they have done a good job.
I am glad a voice of reason appeared in the form of "Mario_v." No logic is being displayed on Clutchfans right now.
What you're missing is O'Brien chose these players with Rick Smith. And there were options: Carr, Garropolo, Birdgewater and Prescott were drafted and have done well. Bradford was traded and has been great. Rumor was Cousins and Tyrod Taylor were being shopped. Teams also traded up for Goff and Wentz. But even if you want none of those guys, what's the logic of going from Fitz to Hoyer/Mallet to Osweiler? What's the logic of starting Mallet twice? This is actively making things worse for no reason.
Fair point, but Rick deserves credit for finding who he has at this point. Arian Foster,Deandre Hopkins, Watt, Clowney,(I think this deserves recognition as Blake Bortles was available) the rest of our front 7, Will Fuller(I think he will be a great wideout), and Deshaun Watson. He passed on Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, when he had an obvious QB need. Rick is doing a good job. First round draft pick failures will set your team back more than 2-4's.
We just drafted Watson. You have to give BOB credit for that. You are not when in reality Deshaun has potential to be all of the above. Think of all the QB's that they didnt go with. The Texans stayed patient and waited for there guy. Eventually, Jacksonville is going to have to redo the QB situation. The Bills will have to redo their situation. Garopollo is unproven albeit I think he will be good, but unproven. Dak is very much helped by his O-line and the jury is still out, and Bridgewater was very average for Minnesota. Cousins? Really? Lord knows the Redskins could have been asking too much. Just stop.
They did you are correct. But they realized it wasn't going to work and changed Brock Osweiler in to Deshaun Watson while getting out of the contract. Of course they could have taken Paxton Lynch or Jacoby Briskett in the first few rounds.......... There was no hand there. After Hoyer's playoff performance there was not an option to have him out for game 1. The Texans had no hand to play, zero. They took a wait and see approach until they saw something they like and it didn't work. I have to give kudos to an organization that took quick accountability and did not hang on to Brock. That is what is important. It payed off instead of waiting Brock out another season like other teams would have.
Because the coaches input is clearly involved in drafting a team where the 53 is determined by the coach.
Input. Yes. But doesn't the ultimate responsibility fall on the GM? If you give him credit for Watson then you HAVE to give him credit for Brock Osweiller as well.
I have been told Brock is a Rick Smith/McNair guy. I do believe Bill O'brien had to sign off at the same time. So for what it is worth, I do have to blame O'brien as well.
